Top teeth

DS has broken his first top tooth and it's sore.

It's that time of the month when my nipples are super sensitive anyway, but with the added tooth sometimes it feels like they are on fire. I'm pretty sure it's not thrush as there's no deep pain and no spots in his mouth.

Are top teeth something you just nurse through? Will he get used to them and adjust?

It feels like he's only been BFing for a couple of months without discomfort and I don't want to go back to being in pain. Or if the pain is a necessary evil, I want to know it will end at some point.

He's 6 months not so I don't have to keep BFing, but I really don't see the point in starting to faff with formula now. We're also doing BLW and he's using a cup so very rarely has a bottle.

There's no need to stop feeding him, just nurse him through it. Sometimes feeding makes emerging teeth more painful but often it's a pain reliver. It does feel slightly different at first, for you, but you'll get used to it. If it's causing him pain, teething gel on, wait a minute or two and then feed - it should be a lot better.

He seems ok with feeding, it more my pain then his. In fact boob always seems to help him, he will roll on and off for hours at night time

He's probably digging in his teeth more because its helping him, so it will get better once they don't hurt as much. My DS2 is only just on verge of sleeping through the night, at nearly a year so I feel your sleeplessness pain.

My little one has just cut his front top two - he was very chewy for a couple of weeks and i found it a bit sore, but it has settled down as he has got used them. I have given him a cooled teething ring to suck just before feeds.

My DS feels sharp & scratchy when teething - it usually disappears after a few days / a week or so. He's got 12 teeth now & is still bf, so I've survived, although it's not much fun at the time. :)

DS's feeding feels sharp & scratchy, I mean. :)

Hi. Angel's idea about giving a teething ring is good - we used ot do that and also giving colder finger foods to eat. I also found that trying to adjust DS's feeding position stopped the rubbing in the same spot. So sometimes we went back to the rugby hold, or I held him a bit more upright to move his head round the nipple a bit more, IYSWIM? It just meant it wasn't always the same spot getting the new teeth...

Finally, I used to find that his latch changed slightly every time he cut new teeth. It's worth checking when new teeth come through that the latch is still good - DS used to get lazy and I'd realise he was only suckling on the nipple bit, rather than having a better latch. If I realised that's what had happened I used to break him off (finger in the mouth technique to avoid nasty 'pops' Wink and then start again...
