hello

I am currently 28 weeks pg with DC1 and hoping to breastfeed if possible but also want to keep an open mind on both expressing and/or FF. So, I wondered if anyone could recommend bottles/teats so that I can at least buy a few just in case I need them. I've heard that Dr Browns are supposed to be good but would welcome any advice from experienced MNs.

Thank you!

Tomee Tippee are meant to be best for mixing with breastfeeding but my daughter took it a few times then decided she liked Mummy better!

We use the Dr. Browns with DS2, who is BF. I FF DS1 and we used the Avent bottles for a while but he got terrible wind and was better on the Dr. Browns.

Nuk ones are good - the teats are sort of flat on one side.

I have used lots of different bottles (currently mixed feeding DC3) but found MAM the best for reducing wind/colic etc. The teat is also quite b/feeding friendly.

good luck

Medela Calma teat makes baby suck teat of bottle in same way as breastfeeding so should avoid nipple confusion.

I have tried Avent, Tommee Tipee anti-colic, Dr Browns and Breastflow. DS seems to get on best with Dr Browns re. wind. He hated the Breastflow teat. He drains the Avent far too fast for my liking. I like the breast-like shape of the Tommee Tipee, but he does seem to take in more air than with the Dr B.

i dont think there are any 'better' bottles than the others. As you can see everyone prefers something different - i got tomme tippe bottles as they were a good price, easy to buy teats etc for if needed and said they were good for bf

stressheaderic · 03/02/2011 00:15

We used Tommee Tippee as did my friend, our two other friends used Avent. All got on fine, but the Tommee Tippee babies were able to hold their own bottle independently at 4 months ish whereas the Avent babies still struggle now at 11 months. Must be the shape of the bottle.
Now that it really matters at all, but just something to bear in mind, it is handy when they can do it themselves!

I use Tommee Tippee as they came free with a £20 mag subscription at the baby show. Techinically I got a subscription with the bottles, as I didn't particularly want the magazine but when you're getting £40 worth of bottle stuff for £20, I wasn't complaining. Anyway, I digress Blush DD didn't ever have any problems accepting them.

I use a Medela Swing to express, which means I have a stash of medela bottles too. I didn't bother getting Medela teats as DD already took TT bottles by then (hand expressed directly into TT bottle for first couple of months as and when I needed)

Agree there is not "best" one, everyone i know uses different ones and has a different story of those they've tried and their baby has hated. Confused
I used MAM anti-colic and found them brilliant for wind, and tried tommee tippee and several others before this.
My only advice is dont buy a full set of anything, i did with ds before he was born and he hated everything i'd bought Angry
I would buy 1 of maybe 2 or 3 different brands and try them on baby first so you dont waste your money on endless sets of 6 useless bottles.
Would definitely buy anti colic from the start even though you dont know yet (obv) if the baby will have colic...wont do any harm if it doesnt have colic, will just help to bring up wind, but if lo does have colic you will be gutted you didnt buy them.

Mammie81 · 04/02/2011 05:30

I was given lots of tommee tippee anti colic bottles and all my friends used them no problem, but I have vowed never to give DS anything other than the MAM bottles after his extended winding sessions with the TT bottles. Cheap and very good for his wind, hes a changed baby since we swapped. Also, they look abit funkier than the plain see through ones Smile We bought some Dr Brown and never had to open them because the MAM worked so well. Its def dependant on the baby though.

Thanks everyone - that's all very useful, especially the advice of buying one or two of different brands rather than a full set until I know what will work for him best.

Thanks again!
