Ds is 8 months and EBF with no problems so far but after the arrival of top front teeth my left breast is really sore when feeding and there is a funny lump developing that is very tender to touch. What can i do to sort this out? Am going to try adjusting the latch but it's quite tricky as he is so wriggly; pushing and pulling and banging his feet about etc. - it's like wrestling an octopus!

Am prob going to bed now but would really appreciate any advice anyone can give.

I'd phone one of the Bfing Helplines in the morning leggy.

It sounds what I've been experiencing this last week and which I self diagnosed as a blocked duct. At least I followed the advice for a blocked duct and it eventually resolved itself. Prior to the actual lump I'd had a persistent milk blister on my nipple for weeks.

Anyhow, it may be worth trying what I did. Namely trying different feeding positions and also usung hot compresses and hand expression combined with massaging the sore area of breast.

Some information on kellymom here

Also, phone a helpline as I'm no expert. Smile

Thanks for your help, I don't think it's a blocked duct though, the lump seems to be a result of chafing. Had an ok feed this morning using the rugby hold so will try that for a bit, will also gove the local bf support a call. Any other suggestions welcome.

Oh I see, you mean from the teeth chafing? Ouch. My 7.5 month old DD is chewing on everything, including me, but no teeth yet. Guess I've got yet more discomfort to look forward to!

Just thought i'd update an ask for a bit more help (needy or what?!).

So i decided that it was too painful on the left hand side to continue and made the decision to switch to bottles. I feel happy to have done 8 months EBF and now seems as good a time as any to stop, plus it means i can make dh do the 5am feed! Anyway, went cold turkey on the painful side but continued to feed from the good side and top up with bottles. By the evening left breast was massively engorged and painful (in a whole new way) so much so that in the morning i fed from both sides and continued to do so throughout the day, only giving a bottle as a sort of extra at bed time.

So now i don't really know what i'm doing! What's the best way to top without it being really painful? Can i carry on breast feeding and just giving occasional bottles or does that never work?

Gaelic- hopefully you will avoid any tooth related damage! i didn't have any problem with DD and her teeth.

Me again. Grin At 8 months it is perfectly possible to carry on b/f and give occasional bottles. I don't have that option as DD won't take one so count yourself lucky. Smile If you want stop altogether I'd have thought the thing would be to wind down gradually, dropping a feed every few days. I've had to wind down daytime feeding in preparation for going back to work. I've done it gradually and never suffered engorgement or pain. HTH, but hope you get some more responses!
