expressing: have I bought the wrong bottles?

I finally decided to start expressing (DD is 10 weeks old) and bought some tommee tippee bottles today, but because the 150 mls and the 260 mls ones were the same price, and because I'm a cheapskate, I bought the 260 mls ones...is that stupidly big? should I exchange them? Realistically I'm never gonna be able to express that much am I?

They'll still work if only half full, you know. Smile

No need to exchange.

It's more about how much your LO takes in a feed. You may have to use more than one lot of ebm per feed. More than 150mls would be a big feed for ebm though.

Just don't buy a tommee tippee electric breast pump!

I had one and it was hard work. the air tube would get moisture in it after I'd used it for as little as five mins sometimes them I'd have to stop and put tube on radiator to dry out. suction not very powerful so took ages to get a decent amount even if air tube didn't get moisture in. I thought it was my supply until someone recommended a hospital grade double pump.

If your pump was a gift I'd seriously ask to get refund and put the £80 towards a double pump. I seem to have recommended a double pump about four times today on various threads so hesitate to do so again in fear of people thinking I'm on commission!

lou19 · 31/01/2011 22:23

oh no, I've got the pump on loan from a friend otherwise I would :)

Don't worry - pumps are very personal.

I've had:

a mini-medela electric pump which didn';t work at all and then expired from exhaustion

An avent hand-pump which was great

A Tommee Tippee manual pump which didn't get any suction (I thought maybe my boobs were too small)

And a hospital grade double electric thingy which could barely squeeze out an ounce.

The right pump is v personal, and how much milk you get can vary wildly (8oz per session with DD1, 2 oz per session with DD2) for a lot of reasons and does not reflect your supply.

Try the one you've been given. If you don't like it, see if you can borrow one from a friend and try something else.

150ml is a lot of ebm in one feed? oh dear. My DS (8 wks) rarely has less than 150 at the moment but is still barely keeping on his 9th percentile!

MoonUnitAlpha · 31/01/2011 23:04

Depends on how many feeds though - EBF babies average about 750ml in 24 hours, so if they're feeding 10 times then 150ml is a lot, but if it's 5 times then it's not so much.

I get on fine with my TT electric - the tube only gets moisture in if the flap that lets the milk through into the bottle isn't opening properly I have found.
