Do some people just leak more than others?

Or is there something that can be done to help?

I'm the only one at baby group covered in milk through pads/bra/vest/top when both sideslet down when dd3 feeds

Judging by my nct group, it varies a lot. Maybe try a breast shell?

belindarose · 27/01/2011 07:31

It does improve. I'd almost forgotten the towels covering the bed, padding my bra with a muslin while i fed (and still having milk get everywhere) till I read your post. Some women don't leak at all, others just get by with a discreet breast pad. The shells are quite good and you can add to any ebm stash you may have, so long as you sterilise the shell.

I leaked loads til about 4 months, then it stopped quite suddenly.

Yes. I'm still leaking when feeding ds2 (16 months). DSIL doesn't when feeding her 6 month old.

robino · 27/01/2011 08:00

Yes. I leak for about the first week and then no more - am very appreciative of this!

mousymouse · 27/01/2011 08:01

I leaked a lot when feeding dc1, not at all with dc2.

littlemisslozza · 27/01/2011 08:12

I leaked copiously with DS1 but only a bit with DS2.

I remember sleeping on towels and I couldn't feed with just a breast pad in the other side as it was soaked within seconds! One thing I did to take advantage of this was to sterilise cups and collect milk from the other side while I fed DS1, then I would freeze it. Very useful and saved expressing if I needed to leave him for a few hours.

I found that breast shells were also ok for collecting milk but within a couple of minutes they were full so I had to keep emptying them into the cup, otherwise I'd move and they would leak through the little holes they had!

It settled down at around 4 months.

Those reusable washable save the planet pads - rubbish! I resorted to putting a sanitary towel in each side at the start. Six months later I am still leaking on the non feeding side each time. I can be quietly sitting having a coffee with hubbie, baby no where to be seen and suddenly have milk trickling into my pants! They say it gets better...

nymphadora · 27/01/2011 08:29

I was like this the whole time last time. (13m). I have a cloth under dd3s chin. & pile of pads next to me for swapping over.

I can feel when I'm about to leak and it's often at random times nothing to do with baby. On superboob side it's like turning on a tap gushing warm milk. Pads work for a short time but are also painful pressing on my supersensitive nipples.

I find shells encourage more leaking during the day but are useful when I'm feeding form the other side. I used to keep it but don't anymore as it seems like very watery milk and dd wees several times an hour, I have it in my head that if I give her too much of the watery stuff in an expressed feed she won't be getting enough of the thicker milk. No idea if thats true!

Also, it can change from baby to baby. With DDs 1 and 2, I only ever leaked first thing in the morning. With DD3 I got through so many tops for the first 8 weeks, it was unreal! I remember standing up from a meal with PILs when DD3 was about 5 months old, and I was wet to my waist Blush

flickor · 27/01/2011 11:23

I leak depending on how she has been feeding. I was in a pub on Sunday with DD and DH - who kindly pointed out that I had a lovely circle. Just wear Lanisoh pads which are normally great.

DitaVonCheese · 27/01/2011 19:42

You have my sympathy - I was a leaker and hated it :( I wore pads at night until DD was about 14 months and during the day a bit longer than that - probably longer than I needed to but I didn't want to risk leaks when out and about. I was literally amazed when I discovered that most people just wear them for the first few months, if at all. Cost me a fortune in pads too - wanted to use reuseables but couldn't keep up with the washing because they just got too wet too fast. Meh!

Ooopsadaisy · 27/01/2011 19:47

My health visitor used to joke that I could feed the street.

Friends had no leaking at all - bitches.

Like all "baby-related ishoooooooos" they seem huge ishooooooos at the time but are quickly forgotten when you move onto the next stage.

Hang on in there and keep a towel stuffed down your jumper.
