How important is milk in a 1yo old diet? Can i stop it altogether

I mean bottles/cups of it, ounces at a time, rather than giving up dairy.

I am asking because I am struggling to get DS to drink cows milk, and I want to give up breastfeeding relatively soon. In fact I am not entirely convinced he is now getting much milk from me, rather suckles for comfort/habit. But I am nervous about removing it completely without substituting with another form of milk.

However, I do recall when I was stopping bf with DD, that some parents do not feed their children milk at all.

DS eats a LOT. He has milk on breakfast, has yogurts, and eats a wide variety of food, fresh fruit, veg, meat. He is reluctant to eat egg, cheese, but will eat pasta and cheese sauce for example.

He has weetabix/porridge before bed with around 5 oz of milk in it, and probably similar amount for breakfast (plus toast!).

I think he might be getting enough calcium, so if I did stop breastfeeding now, would I need to offer him more milk? Or can I just continue stuffing full of other food?

Come on ladies, i know it is not quite as important as some of the other troll like threads, but it is parenting related!

From what you've described, it sounds like he's probably getting enough milk from other sources. Calcium can also be found in other foods such as curly kale, sardines, tofu and calcium enriched cereal.

Not an expert but didn't want to get told off for not answering your question Grin

here, have a reward. consider it like a gold star.

oh and he loves sardines. he loves red meat. he loves greens. it is mostly the milk he does not do. he also likes, so i found yesterday, butterbeans, kidney beans, aduki beans and something else can't remember what!

Also interested in this thread. Reason tells me that they don't really need to drink milk for the calcium as there are plenty of children out there who either don't like the stuff or who are allergic and are therefore getting the nutrients from elsewhere. Also children in some cultures don't drink milk at all.
So to answer your question...it looks like your son is getting a good balanced diet, so nothing to worry about. However, I'm not sure what the official line is on this one.

My son is now 2, but since about 18months, wouldn't drink cows milk at all!!! so hence hasn't had any drink of milk since then, he's been to dietician before that, (he was lactose intollerance til about 18month) and she said as long as he was making it up with cheese, yoghurts, milk in cereal, white bread etc in day that was fine, which he does. white bread?!!! oh well then that sorts it ALL out! DS is obsessed with white bread, or, tbh anything bread related. He goes absolultely crazy for it. Bounces on his bottom 'huhuhuhuhuhuh didle didle didle' (means 'give me') arms stretched if we even dare to eat bread in front of him. With jam on, butter on, or just plain bread, he cares not.

Lovely. I shall consider his bread diet as bottle replacement.

Grin yip she said white bread, also broccoli, em baked beans? lots of calcium!! I got a little book from the hospital when he was lactose intollerant about maintaining calcium on a milk free diet, and those were in there..can't find the bloody book now, but those where def listed :)

PavlovtheCat · 26/01/2011 20:58
