Nursing chairs - very windy baby, need to improve feeding position

Hi there

I'm breastfeeding and, in principle, i am succeeding as my 6 week old son is putting on plenty of weight. However, feeds are quite stressful as my flow seems quite fast and regularly chokes him, and he pulls off the nipple all the time to scream etc. He then has wind and sick for ages afterwards, wants to feed an hour or so afterwards and is generally not a happy bunny.

I went to a baby latte session and was shown a way to improve the latch. He fed well and slept for 4 hours afterwards which was a minor miracle. BUT I haven't been able to replicate this position at home. I think part of the problem is that our sofa is very deep, low and meant for lounging (rather than actual sitting!) so this is making it hard for me to get the positioning right.

So, I need to buy a chair to feed in. Are there any recommended nursing chairs or, indeed, any normal chairs that would be good for the job? Ideally would be a chair we could keep in our living room long term but that's not essential (what was ebay invented for after all!)

Thanks

IME (all 6 weeks of it!) any reasonably upright high-backed comfortable chair with arms works well but you may also need a footstool.

I would beware of getting a less expensive glider chair online. I got a tutti bambini glider recliner from mothercare originally and it had to go back - it squeaked, was so stiff I couldn't recline it and the build quality was awful, especially given it was a £200 chair! Then got a Dutalier glider and love it.

fwiw leaning back slightly after dd is latched seems to help with fast flow

thanks for this - will have a look into that chair. also saw breastfeeding counsellor and she said to press in the other breast whilst feeding to help slow the let down...demands a bit of coordination but will hopefully help!

I have an Ikea 'Poang' chair - it's not a specific nursing chair, but that's what I bought it for.

It rocks gently, has great back support, comes in some lovely fabrics and is soooo comfy. I have the matching footstool too.

If I remember, my chair was £80 and the footstool £40 but it depends on the fabric you choose.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to do links, but I can thoroughly recommend this one!

I love my Dutailier (bought 2nd hand) but I find that 8wo dd puts her feet on one arm and pushes off it now, with my nipple still in her mouth of course. They are very expensive new it sounds like the Ikea chair could be worth a try first.

Intrigued about the advice to press in other breast to slow flow, I thought they were independent but will give anything a try as my dd clamps her gums onto my nipple to slow flow...

the other thing i have been told is to hand express a bit of milk out first to ease the flow...

snowcone - my DD does that too! Highly annoying.

Don't bother with an expensive glider chair unless the arms drop as ime they soon become too narrow to get a good position. Whatever you get, don't spend a lot of money as while it's pretty hard now, soon you'll be feeding all over the place and it'll be much easier.

I just recommend lots of cushions. I tend to cross my legs on our low deep sofa too.
