Back arching

DS is 5 weeks old and has been arching his back when I try and bring him to the breast or during a feed for the last couple of weeks. It's not happening at every single feed. He is always crying/fussing when he does this. I need to wind him frequently during a feed but this doesn't eliminate all of the back arching.

I'm too tired to think about what else is relevant to tell you. He is DC3 and the other two were BFed for 16 and 14 months so I should know what I'm doing by now!

Any ideas about what's wrong or how to help him?

I should add that he also frequently doesn't open his mouth when he comes to the breast, he just starts a milking action. I'm not sure if this is because my milk has already let down and he can taste some milk?

maybe he doesn't want feeding? try later?

He wouldn't be rooting for a feed if he wasn't hungry though, would he?

My lo is also doing this and has been for ages - she is now 13 weeks. Hv has suggested reflux so we are starting gaviscon today - will have to wait & see if it works. It is horrible isnt it, I have spent much of the last 13 weeks crying, shouting at my husband & resenting the baby (also my 3rd. I am in total turmoil and very close to giving up. It may be worth you chatting to your hv about it. I really hope things improve for you, as for me I feel I am right in the middle of a dard tunnel with no end in sight.

Over supply????

Minnie24 · 25/01/2011 17:21

In my case I wish it was. i am more worried about the opposite as she is feeding so rubbishly at times is can be 12 hours between feeds off one breast

Hmm, I'll see what he weighs at his six week check on friday. I guess if he has put on loads of weight then it could indicate over supply or if he has poor weight gain then reflux? I thought that I had tamed my mammoth supply but maybe not...

my lo roots for any problem not just hunger, e.g. wet nappy, wind/tummy upset; the latter particularly during a feed when she fusses and aches.

A lactation consultant recommended giving her a dummy when she does this to see if she is really hungry - if she is she rejects the dummy, otherwise accepts it for comfort.

Her theory was that I have a lot of milk and when dd has tummy upset and nurses for comfort she takes in more milk which upsets her tummy more. It seems to have worked so far.

Minnie, my suggestion was to the OP.

Your situation sounds different.

You could start a new thread on it and then it's less confusing :)
