expressed milk smells sour ...

A couple of times now I have expressed, frozen my milk straight away, then kept it for no more than a few weeks in the freezer. But when it has been defrosted (once at room temp, once by putting bag in hot water, once in fridge) it has a really strange odour, sort of sour. It never used to happen - my ds is 5 months old - anyone have any ideas on what might be happening?

yes! it's called saponification.. basically when exposed to extremes of temperature the lipases in it turn to soap!

you can get round it by gently scalding it in a pan before you freeze it. don't boil... just heat up well!

no harm in it at all... as long as he doesn't mind the taste!

i don;t think you have to do it for long. literally just warm it right up and then cool and freeze it

i think he'd eat anything! might just carry on as we are then ... thank you!
