Blinkin' blocked duct again

My baby (6 months) isn't very well, and has not drunk nearly as much milk as normal over the last 24 hours or so. I'm not too worried, as he's certainly had enough to avoid dehydration, and he has had a dodgy tummy so I think he is probably being sensible to avoid food. The problem is that my breasts have been really full and uncomfortable - I've been trying to get DS to feed as often as possible, but he just messes around/blows raspberries or else sucks till the let down comes and then pulls off as milk sprays EVERYWHERE and won't go back on. My left boob has now got very sore and lumpy. I'm trying to start him on that side when I can, and have dug out the pump and had an expressing session(ah the relief!).

Not sure what I'm asking really! I just wondered why people suggest rest when you have a blocked duct, does anyone know? Not that my poor DS is up for much except cuddles on the sofa...

Right. I am blocked duct clearer extraordinaire. Listen up Wink

  1. You're doing a lot of the right things: feeding as much as possible, starting on uncomfortable side.
  2. Expressing also a good plan. Try not to leave it til you're bursting though!
  3. Use warmth & gentle massage to help with blockages - warm flannel, in the shower etc, use a gentle combing action towards the nipple then massage the lumpy area, but not too aggressively! Repeat a couple of times a day at least.
  4. Use a pillow to keep weight off the affected breast when sleeping
  5. You might want to try a sleep bra/no bra for a couple of days, depending on how much support you usually need, as this takes pressure off the breasts.
  6. Check out this: www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html for further info, as realised I have to go and get DD2!

Good luck!

Thanks. I just wish DS would feed a bit more; he's really not interested much today! I have read it's good to feed with the baby's chin pointing towards the blockage, but it's at the top of my boob so would need to have him over my shoulder - I don't think he's up for that today!

When I was in hospital and my milk came in I had a blocked duct on top of my boob and the BFC that helped me held DD upside down over my shoulder ... and it worked! :o

If you are OK taking it I find ibuprofen really helpful for resolving blocked ducts (plus all of the above)
