Argh suddenly got sore boobs feeding DS at 17 months!

Help can anyone answer why this might be? He is waiting on his finaly four molars to come through so I wondered if it might be tooth related particularly as I think he's taking less boob into the mouth and is also pulling his head back more with me still attached! Suddenly every feed is hurting me - not agony but enough to make me grind my teeth and yelp sometimes! What's going on? And more importantly what can I do to stop it!!

Argh anyone? DS won't drink cow's milk and I so want to feed him until he weans or turns two but BFing has never, ever been painful before apart from a couple of days when he was a newbie. Tiktok can you help?

I had sore boobs when feeding a toddler - I'm afraid I was pg (not to scare you!).

On the other hand, I'm still feeding 2yr old DD and a couple of weeks ago suddenly got really sore and uncomfortable. I think that time it was just lazy latching and bad positioning. Good thing about when they are a little older is you can talk to them more, now if DD has bad latch I ask her to come off and try again.

Mine is exactly the same age and doing the same. I'm thinking of treating for thrush. DD has been ill and I think a combination of more frequent feeding, poor latch due to stuffiness/ pain and probably new teeth (can't see and am NOT putting my finger in there again!) has caused the pain and possibly mild thrush. Now she's almost better I'm taking her off if the latch is bad and making her start again, but she does find this hilarious then laughs while still latched on which also hurts. Sorry not to be of more help.

I am still BFing my 24 months old and yes, I can remember when she was around 18months that it did hurt sometime. I guess it has to do with teething and the fact that she become stronger..I think my boobs just got used to it after a while and the pain disappeared. I actually started BF her more frequently but not so long. Sorry I can not be of more help!

Oh wow thanks so much for the flurry of responses. Well I'm not pregnant as I tested for that because I'd heard about it causing sore boobs. Am actually a bit gutted about that :o I was worrying sorting out the latch would be harder now he's a strapping wee toddler than a teeny tiny pliable babe but you're right I should ask him to cooperate. And as for thrush hummmm what symptoms would I have? And yes DS's a bugger for giggling on the boob. Cute but ouch.

Definitely have a look at your positioning and latch. It's really easy to get complacent after breastfeeding for so long.

You probably want it sorted before you reach the bobbing on and off and changing sides 100 times per feed stage Wink

Just looked up thrush symptoms and I think it could be that as DS's got his hand permanently in his mouth right now and is a bugger to feed solids so I think something may be up in his mouth too. Really hope it's not the latch, I don't have any bf supporter contacts these days! Thanks all for your help.

I've started treating for thrush today and it already feels better. I had it really badly a year ago and needed weeks of fluconazole. Hopefully just the cream will do the trick this time. In my case I'm sure it's caused by a poor latch due to her cold, so will still be keeping an eye on that.

DS gets scratchy / bitey when he's teething but it usually sorts itself out. He's doing it now at 13 months with 4 molars coming through.

Read thread title and thought "pregnant" but see that's been ruled out.

Thrush? I got a bad case when DS2 was about 17 months old - my nipples looked like they were about to drop off...

AllSheepareWhite · 25/01/2011 22:28

Had sore nipples when DD (19 months) was around that age, mainly because she upped her feeding frequency due to the teething and my nipples weren't used to it. Went back to using nipple cream and it soon got less painful. If you are getting weird shooting pains in the breast and nipple when feeding it is worth checking out thrush. If pulling back on the nipple while still attached is causing a problem say no very firmly, stick a finger in the side of his mouth and put him down, he will soon stop.
