Feeding from both sides at night?

In the day I feed DS (9 weeks) from one side, then put him down for 10 minutes or so and he's ready to feed from the next side. At night I just feed from one side and I wonder if it would be better to feed from both as he would be fuller and sleep longer. However, I tried last night and he had fallen fast asleep. I don't really want to try to wake him to feed as it seems to defeat the object.

What do you do? Is it worth trying to wake him to take the second breast?

My DD (7 months) only ever feeds from one side - she's always really sick if she has both. So I only do one side at night as well, but I think I'd do that anyway tbh. I'm usually asleep as well by the time she's finished.

I do one side, then burp and change nappy to wake her up and then do other side. DD goes straight back to sleep after second side. Doesn't always work in that she will stay asleep during nappy change and burping but I like to get both sides in if poss for my own comfort as much as anything!

I did both sides and just gently stroked the back of her neck to rouse her enough to take the second side.
I found out during feeds in the day that offering one side literally halves the time she'll go between.

She's 12 weeks now and sleeps right through.

How many times does your DS wake in the night? If he only wakes once or twice I'd carry on doing what you're doing and not disturb him Smile

Sounds normal. Lots of babies only feed from one side at night - and if they do feed from both, they don't sleep any longer.

I just do one side.

Thank you. He wakes normally once or twice in the night so it's fine but he does one longer stretch when I first put him to bed after he has had a good feed from both sides. That's why I wondered if it would help but the night feeds aren't a massive problem Smile

Plus I'm too lazy to be getting up to change him just to wake him!

you can feed him while he's asleep you know or just do a sneaky dream feed when you go to bed.

I only ever fed from one side at night as ds lay on the right side of me so he only had access to the right boob. By 5 months he was in his own room and only had one night feed so I sit in a chair now and feed both sides.

blackteaplease · 25/01/2011 12:09

You can feed from both sides without moving the baby, I sort of lean over and dangle the upper boob in dd's face if that makes any sense.

AngelDog · 25/01/2011 22:54

That sleeping for longest at the first stretch is really normal, OP - I think it's to do with there being a strong biological urge to sleep at the beginning of the night, which gets less as the night goes on. That's why babies (and adults) are more likely to go back to sleep if they wake at 11pm than if they wake at, say, 4am.

i used to spend much of the night waking up to ds nuzzling against me to find booby, and then me having to switch sides. every hour and a half Shock he would feed off alternate boobs each time he woke. actually i thought i had to do this Confused but anyway i know that the flow would slow down in one after a while and then he would get frustrated, so i needed to switch to give him a quicker flow which would be more effective at sending him off to sleep quicker iyswim

petisa · 25/01/2011 23:56

i only do one side at night but it seems to be a lot more milk than during the day from the feel of the flow and her gulping noises, so she seems satisfied with that. i'm usually asleep before she's finished anyway Blush

I usually only feed from one boob, unless she is wide awake and starving which does happen occasionally.

I can't believe some people can change nappies and their baby will continue sleeping... A gnat's fart would wake my dd- unless I want her to wake up for some reason of course. Also how do people get their babies to dream feed? If my dd is sleeping or very sleepy she will not feed!!
