Hi, my 16 mo has a bug :( and just wondering what advice anyone has to help him.

He has not eaten anything since breakfast yesterday, he got ill when I was at work and had about 3 good feeds beween me getting home and bedtime.

He was then up in the early hours this morning and fed on and off for about an hour as well as having some water. He was then sick again a wee bit later.

Am at work just now :( so will just let him feed as much as he wants this afternoon and at the weekend.

DH (SAHD) is just offereing him water lots, he is just shaking his head at food at the moment.

Should I try to do lots of smaller feeds after him being sick after a big long feed this morning? Are there any foods that might be good to offer him?

Thanks.

He;s not really been ill before apart from colds so i am feeling at a loss.

I read your post that you are BFing?

If so then that really is the best thing you can give him.
Try and do small feeds with 30 min gaps, but it is hard when they are thirsty and hungry underneath the vomiting :(

Once he has managed to keep some fluids down for a couple of hours then you could offer dry toast to see how he copes.

I read it that you are Bfing too. If so, and I'm not trained, I would feed when he wants to. If he is drinking water this morning then he'll be ok to wait until you get home.

Looks like an afternoon of Bfing and TV Smile

jaggythistle · 21/01/2011 09:06

oh yeah! BFing, forgot to actually say that. Blush

I'd definitely feed him little and often, when I was bfing and ds got sick it was the only thing he could keep down, often he would throw up after about 30mins but at least it had stayed down for a bit so he got some nutrients from it. Only thing I found was that as by
the time he was that sort of age I was usually only
bfing couple of times a day so I had to restrict his feeds to short ones otherwise I wouldn't have enough milk to bf him so
frequently!

If your dh is getting worried about him getting dehydrated he could get some rehydration salts for him from pharmacy or do a homemade version with warm (cooling boiled) water, salt, sugar and a dash of fruit juice - if you google it you can get the proportions.

From what I've read as long as you keep the
liquid intake high don't need to worry about solids

I'm no expert though!

good news is that he managed some breakfast this morning - he was at his high chair looking for some food after he woke up.

he had a feed and a wee lunch when I got home. he is still a bit pale and wants lots of cuddles, but I can cope with that :)

guess it's been one of those 24 hour type things.

thanks again.

That is good news and I'm sure that you helped him get over it by feeding him.

You sound like a great Mum Smile

jaggythistle · 21/01/2011 19:40

i am all Blush now!

i would like to think that it helped that he could take some milk though. :)

he had a bit more food and more milk at tea time, still paranoid that every wee burp will be followed by sick. Grintrying to dissuade him from playing on carpets and rugs...

he normally only has 2 or 3 feeds a day now, and it's nice to get a cuddle when i get home sometimes.

Arrowroot (sp) biscuits are suppose to be good when ur sick

mawbroon · 21/01/2011 22:28

Glad he's feeling a bit better.

I always give the ds's dry food and breastmilk only after a stomach bug for around 24hrs.

My understanding with breastmilk is that even if they chuck it up as soon as they've fed, they will still have absorbed a good amount.

Hope he's back to normal soon

jaggythistle · 21/01/2011 22:36

spoke a bit too soon, he's just been sick again. :( bathed and cot changed now, just hoping he'll get some sleep as he looks shattered.

his mum and dad certainly are!

he is cuddling in just now and has taken a little feed.

Hope you all had a better night. Like mawbroon my understanding was that they absorbed a good amount and that will include your antibodies too Smile

jaggythistle · 22/01/2011 09:38

he is not being sick very often at all, so should be ok there. :)

he slept till 5 so got a rest. went back to sleep at 6 but only for half an hour. we then had feeding dozing and watching cbeebies on mummy's phone for a few hours!

thanks again all.

he's in not bad form, still just very cuddly and looks a bit uncomfortable and grumpy sometimes.

Hope you all get some rest today Smile

Hi hope you ds is improving, when dd had rotavirus( a horrible D&V bug) she was in hospital ,and they advised feed when ever she wanted, also if she wanted solids give them, even if she was sick again.
They worked on the principle that some nutrients get absorbed if the food stays down for just a few minutes.
The rehydration mix is 600ml boiled, cooled water tbsp sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mixed until all dissolved and diluted with a little fruit juice, sipped regularly

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 10:38

herding I've never heard of a vomiting Bf toddler having to have a rehydration solution. Obviously you DD had it in the extreme though, poor love.

Are you saying that jaggy's DS might need it too?

herdingcats · 22/01/2011 10:43

JJJ - I just put the recipe for it on as the hospital staff recommended it rather than plain water. If you have the method ,its there, but you don't have to use it. IYSWIM Smile
That said if water is all you can get them to take it is re-hydrating a bit too.
BM is always 1st option ,but my DD was vomiting as she fed,so not nice for me or her.

jaggythistle · 22/01/2011 10:48

strangely he's actually only been sick a couple of times each day- thought he was over it till last night as he'd not been sick all day. he is drinking water ok and having feeds so I'd think he's ok.

his wee friend had a similar thing recently - not being sick much, but tired and off food for a bit.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 10:51

herdin your poor DD, that sounds terrible for you both.

FreudianSlippers · 22/01/2011 10:57

Oh it's miserable. But always such a relief when you're able to bf through it.

Advice is to give whatever they want to eat (you don't need to stick to a bland diet) but avoid dairy as it irritates a poorly gut and can start them vomitting again.

Hope he's well again soon.

herdingcats · 22/01/2011 17:41

She did get better after about a week and only had a coouple of relapses. Left her with a milk protein intolerence ,that we have to watch.
As FS says we were told to give any food, but avoid dairy.
Jaggy -sounds like he's on the mend , good news Smile

jaggythistle · 22/01/2011 23:30

fingers crossed. no more sick today, pretty much just bf and slept all day. had a tiny breakfast, no lunch and tiny dinner.

nappies have been very light compared to normal, getting better though.

he has been the clingiest boy ever, so we've had a lot of cuddles!

thanks again. :)
