Breast feeding after elscs

Just out of interest has anyone noticed a difference bf ing after an elscs compared to a normal delivery? I have have two previous induced labored and certainly worked hard for different reasons to establish bf ing. I've read that it can be harder after an elscs as the body doesn't acknowledge the need as quickly? Anyone?

I've had 2 cses - the first an emergency one and the second an elective. Both times my milk took 5 days to come in (both cses on a Friday, milk came in Tuesday) but no probs bfing and both dds seemed fine on the colostrum for 5 days. Each time the mw got the baby latched on within half an hour of the c/s. They have to get the baby latched on for you as you are still lying down mostly very numb, but hey, random hospital people touching bits of you is not unheard of when you give birth.

If you can bf lying down on your side it's a great position for post-cs feeding.

Bfing went great with both of them - fed dd1 for just over a year and am still feeding dd2 at 6 mo Smile

thanks for that. dd was a normal delivery and ds was an Emergency ceaser. and yes i fed him laid down alot at first. I think normally milk doesnt come in till day 3/4 anyway? So i am a little reassured!

Ah, so you've already had an em c/s. Well there was no difference in bfing after an emergency one and an elective one for me (except I was a LOT less knackered after the elective, having skipped the whole labour bit!)

I had a semi-elective cs after failed induction and although DD had real feeding issues due to fluid in her lungs and stomach (forceps were needed to get her out) and we didn't actually bf till day 4, I had plenty of colostrum and my milk came in on day 3.

I had a normal delivery but was a bit of a nightmare - long labour and daughter born with a nerve injury. She refused to feed and we went to formula after 2 weeks.

DS born by ELCS and 7 weeks on still BFing. Going well. Had few probs like mastitis and thrush but certainly no prob caused by section. I did't feed lying down - managed cross cradle. Pillows helped lots and used rugby ball hold.

Milk came in on day 3 and had loads. All mirrored my daughter really except I managed it this time!

Nightmare bf after an EMCS. Milk arrived on day 4 but DS wouldn't latch on and I was in a lot of post cs pain so it went rather pear-shaped. Not a happy time.

Easy-peasy bf after an ELCS Smile. Milk came in on Day 4, no problems at all. Podgy DD and no pain.

now i feel much more reassured.. i shall stop worrying about it so much! I guess withds, who was the emlscs i had weekes of antibiotica and the worst thrush and he wanted to feed all the time and had a constant upset stomach from all anti biotics i was on! i did manage to feed him for 7 months in total but it was hard... dd however was hard too as she had a 'big' tounge and didnt latch on well so i guess im anxious about this time round! thanks for the encouraging comments!
