Had DS's minor tongue tie cut yesterday and was hoping that would be the answer to the painful feeding and compressed misshapen 'lipstick' nipples. But no. Feeding just as unbearable.

Have been expressing for two weeks but don;t think i can keep it up.

Have been taking fluconazole and using cream on me and DS for 10 days now trying to treat what might be thrush, but still no change in pain.

BF counsellor can't see anything wrong with his latch and he is feeding and gaining fine.

It's just me that's in tears and pain. Can't do it anymore.

IM(far from expert)O lipstick nipples means he's on the nipple so thats a poor latch whatever the counsellor says.

Have you checked out the info online from Dr Jack Newman and also on Dr Sears' website? Thats helped me (6 weeks and still going).

Sorry you are going thtough this. Sometimes it takes them a while ot relearn how to use their newly mobile tongue and get out of habit of gumming you. My DD had TT snipped at 8 weeks and it took another couple of weeks until we were pain free. Going through same now with DS who is 5 weeks, had his TT done last week and the pain is slowly but surely improving - kind of one step forward two steps back. Some feeda re now a dream and pain free, some are still a little chompy but totally bearable compared to the horrible pain before he had his done. He also has a high palate and I think it can only get better as he gets bigger.

Latch could look reasonable from outside if he is gumming you or pulling his tongue back.

There was another thread on this where I posted some exercises we were given to help him use his tongue better, will try and find it.

It is up to you, but if you can hang in there you may well see a gradual improvement. Worth talking to whoever snipped it too and make sure they got it all IYSWIM.

It is truly horrible though, you have my sympathy.

This is the thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/breast_and_bottle_feeding/1102029-Posterior-Tongue-tie

See second page. Hope you are ok. How old is your DS?

Thanks for the advice, and the link. I will try out some of the suggestions.

I had expected the latching problem to be solved instantaneously with the tt snip, but I am encouraged to hear that maybe it just takes a little time and it could still have helped.

I will have to express and keep trying a little feed when I can face it, I just get so stressed when I know I'm going to put him to the boob that it is making even the time between feeds fretful for me.

He is 6 weeks, now.

Oooh just at a tough time, too. You poor thing :(

If you can get through the 6 week growth spurt, in another couple of weeks things should be much better. Hang in there, it will get better. The thing is, you've been through the worst of it and just a bit longer and it will start to improve. Remember the breastfeeding lines are always there to help talk through things.

All the best.

organiccarrotcake · 20/01/2011 23:50

What thrush creams are you using BTW?

lizzie1977 · 21/01/2011 00:37

It took a few weeks here too before the feeding improved after the snip. I was quite deflated as had also assumed effect & improvements would be immediate. Hope same happens for you if you can hang on in there any longer. Best of luck to you xo
