My DS is almost 1yo, he is breast fed mostly in the evenings and through the night, he doesn't drink much otherwise during day times. Occasionally he'll drink a little water from a beaker. I've tried several times to give him formula but he refuses it.
Anyway, 2 nights ago he suddenly stopped bfing. Refused it at bed time then again all through the night. He hasn't bf at all since, and won't drink much water at all. He's a bit ill at the moment with a fever, took him to doc who diagnosed something viral which has given him slight inflammation of throat and ears. I expect this is at the root of it all, however when he has nurofen or calpol his fever goes away and he's perky, he will eat a little solid food so I've been giving him fruit puree, he will even eat rice cakes, biscuits and toast which makes me think his throat can't be all that bad. Despite my best efforts he's prob drank only 100ml of water in the last 2 days, and had a couple of fruit puree pots, nothing else liquid. He's refused fruit juice, formula, and diluted fruit puree. His nappies are practically dry now and his skin is getting paler and mottly, I'm worried about dehydration.
Wen we saw doc yesterday she said once his fever comes down he should start drinking again, and if fever doesn't improve to take him to A&E. Thing is that fever has gone, as long as he has meds, but he's still not drinking. I don't really want to have him rehydrated via IV, I just need him to start drinking and/or BF again, and I'm not sure if going to A&E would be an overreaction, he's still interacting and chatting and eating a little.
What do you think I should do?? thanks.
