wind or hunger?

My 10 day old DS was feeding beautifully. but for last few days, he is screaming for hours, bicycling his legs, arching his back, generally looking in pain from wind. Breastfeeding soothes him wonderfully then ten minutes after stopping he is crying again. He farts all day but it doesn't seem to relieve the pain. i hate seeing him like this.

I am so frazzled now I don't know what to do Sad. Any advice?

as an update, I couldn't keep feeding - it has been constant today. I gave him some formula and he guzzled the lot and fell asleep. I tried expressing and nothing came out, not a drop, whereas normally I get 80ml ish. Have I been starving him? Oh god Sad how can I get back to normal?

Pumping is no indicator of output and IME can be badly affected by stress especially early on.

Has he been having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? Is his weight gain fine? If so, he isn't going hungry.

I've been there. A lot of my early posts were about my 'terribly windy babies'.

We're now at 13 weeks and still EBF. I can't really offer any advice, as I don't think I found anything that really helped, but for us it slowly got better as the babies grew.

Sorry I can't offer much more than 'it does get better'. We tried Dentinox Colic Drops for a while - they seemed to sooth one of my twins but not the other. Might be worth a go (though I'm not sure whether they actually did anything, or it was just the shock of the new taste that stopped the hysterical crying ....). Also tried Infacol, but that is supposed to be given before a feed, and I didn't want to use medicine unless there was a real problem, so that didn't work so well as Dentinox for me.

Try heat them massage before expressing. When are you next seeing a mw or hv?

bigkidsmademe · 20/01/2011 16:00

i did that just now and it has helped. mw tomorrow. he jst did a nice yellow poo so i'm slightly less worried although still want to get it sorted.

la leche suggests too much fore milk nt enough hind, so might try one side only each feed to see if that helps

thanks

:( :(

Difficult when they cannot tell you what's wrong!

Please call a breastfeeding counsellor, though, OP.

It is not a good idea to deliberately only feed one sided with a new baby. This can reduce your supply (not an issue if the baby is piling on weight and is a bit older).

There may be other issues here - please don't assume 'too much foremilk'.

The whole thing may just be a 'mysterious few days' and nothing significant at all, anyway :)

oh, ok. I guess I'm just so keen for an answer. His poor wee face Sad

will discuss with the mw tomorrow

thanks everyone

Even if its a milk imbalance issue, it can be down to poor positioning not just you producing too much (fore)milk. I wouldn't block feed without seeing a specialist first.
