4 month sleep regression- how long does it last??

On behalf of all the people in the same boat, going through the 4 month sleep regression, does anyone have experience of this that has come out the other side? what did you do if anything to improve the sleep situation? and how long did it last?

By the way- mine started bang on 16 weeks (to the day) and we've been through it for 3 weeks now. It's challenging, to say the least!!

Thanks!

My DD slept well until she hit 4 months, she's now 7 months and wakes every 2-3 hrs throughout the night. She's breastfed and we've started BLW. I keep waiting for this 'phase' to stop, as I'm absolutely shattered! I'm not holding my breath though as my older DD woke 3-9 times a night until she was a year old, and didn't sleep though the night until she was nearly two.

Oh needahol I didn't really want to know that. But in my sleep zombie state I'll probably forget pretty soon.

Sorry to sound silly but what's a 4m sleep regression?

Dozeyland · 21/01/2011 19:21

Dd is 12weeks...

Dozeyland · 21/01/2011 19:22

Dd is 12weeks

Dozeyland, at around 4 months, some babies have a lot of sleep issues, waking a lot in the night, not settling as well etc etc. It's thought to be due to all the new things they're learning around this time, rolling, reaching and grabbing, processing faces and all that sort of thing.

If you look at Angeldog's links it explains it all.

I had heard of the 4 month sleep regression, but not the one at 7 months. I just assumed some babies wake up more than others. I've had lots of contradicting advice and 'tips' to help a 6+ month old baby baby sleep better too. Some say it might help if a baby has a banana, yoghurt or formula milk before bed as it will make their tummies feel full and they will sleep better. Others say breastmilk is better as it's easier to digest and will aid peaceful sleep (I'm not trying to get into a BF/FF/weaning argument, honestly!)

My DD2 woke every two hours as usual last night. I think she's just waking up out of habit and needs a cuddle to go back to sleep. I tried feeding her but she wasn't interested. I know I should try and see if DP can comfort her and get her back to sleep, but that will mean we'll both be shattered the next day and neither of us will have the energy to play with DD1!

'Your in control'?? Bloody hell.

Anyway, DD is nearly 6 mo and slept 7 till 3, feed then down again until between 6 and 7 right up until around 15 wks then went to pot.

Still wakes up more than she used to, but then she is older and more stimulated. I just have her in with me most of the time, feed her when required.

She'll grow out of it.

NinkyNonker · 22/01/2011 20:30

Oh, and as DD is BF there is no bloody way I'm witholding feeds in the middle of the night. I'm still aghast at the idea that I should somehow be controlling, or wanting to control my baby daughter. Hmm

NoTeaForMe · 22/01/2011 20:46

Shhh-you're all scaring me!! My daughter is 14 weeks on Mon and up until a couple of weeks ago was a great sleeper, now it's all gone belly up! After reading this I'm terrified it's going to go on and on and on!! I'm already so tired!!

LeggyBlondeNE · 22/01/2011 21:37

Gosh, this isn't as cheering as I'd hoped.

We also had regression kick in at 16 weeks when baby got a cold. I assumed she'd settle down after it cleared but she didn't. She used to sleep for 6 hours followed by two blocks of 2.5-3 hours. Now we're at 5 weeks of her waking at least every other hour and sometimes hourly.

And she's already having formula top-ups at tea time and 3am...

and as a baby who's been slow in weight gain, it's been drilled into me never to skip an opportunity to feed her but it's getting pretty wrteched.

Petsville · 23/01/2011 08:50

Well, I hesitated to post this for a few days in case it was just a blip, but I think we've got through it. For the last four nights DS has only woken once or twice between 7 and 7. I've no idea what made the difference - it's as if someone had flicked a switch.

Took eight and a half weeks of him waking every two hours, and nearly killed me. Now we just wait for the next regression...

DD slept through 6-19 weeks. At 19 weeks it all went wrong, slightly better now at 24 weeks, a typical night would be bed at 8.20, wakes at 2, 5 and 7.

Dozeyland · 24/01/2011 07:59

Do ALL babies go through this?

Cosmosis · 24/01/2011 08:41

dozeyland no they don't.
