My dad who's over 60 and has shown little interest in child rearing methods up to now just gave me a lecture on breast feeding. I thought here we go, he's going to tell me I should stop now DS has reached 12 months. But surprise, surprise he said "I hope you're going to carry on breast feeding, they do it 'til 7 in some cultures"

Glad to know my dad's enlighted, but I don't think I'll continue for quite that long!

Hey,good for him!!

frannykenstein · 06/10/2005 12:36

That is fab, get him to hang around baby clinics and see if he can convert a few health visitors

moondog · 06/10/2005 12:40

He'llbe training as a b/f counsellor next lol!!

(Actually, wonder if there are any blokes who do this?)

Beanfrog · 06/10/2005 13:20

A male b/f counsellor!
In todays sad climate he'd probably be strung up for being a pervert.

And having had a male HV, who I found it almost impossible to discuss b/f with, I think for me it would have to be a woman.

And as for my Dad he'd terrify everyone!

That's sweet Congratulations for doing so well with breastfeeding too!

Roxswood · 06/10/2005 19:49

I have tried to educate every one of my childless male friends about breastfeeding as well as my female ones figuring the more they know about it the more likely they are to be supportive when they get married and have their own.

popsycal · 06/10/2005 19:51

My very opinionated and arrogant uncle surprised me a few months ago with a similar compliment......

netter · 06/10/2005 22:46

There are no male bfc's as one of the criteria to be accepted onto training is that you have to have breastfed at least one baby.

hunkerpumpkin · 07/10/2005 15:40

Wasn't there a man in Malaysia who breastfed one of his children after his wife died?

Eh? I can't get it...

hunkerpumpkin · 07/10/2005 21:18

Try this

Mad site. Unassisted birth! No thanks!

Lel1972 · 07/10/2005 21:18

how do you become a bf counsellor? as a Registrar, I'm on the maternity ward a couple of mornings a week to register babies, and usually find I'm giving (informal, unqualified!) advice to mums on bf - i found it really hard with my DD but kept going and it got easier, and i'd love to help other mums carry on if they really want to, but don't know how to go about it. my mw mentioned it to me over a year ago, but i haven't seen her for a while to talk about it again.

the NCT organise training for bfc's:

try here

by the way, re male bfc's - the rule for antenatal teachers is that you have to have given birth at least once, but the NCT is currently reviewing it because a man has applied to become one. might have an impact on male bfc's too.

moondog · 07/10/2005 21:35

Hey far out hunker!!!
(I knew even before going to the pictures that Bob would be the kind of bloke to have a long grey ponytail lol!)

Good for them!
I take their point about a man b/feeding being no odder than formula.......

I think spidermamma wanted an unassisted birth but her dh said no??? I know that Sheila Kitzinger did (with dh in attendance) and was threatened with prosecution.

Roxswood · 10/10/2005 21:23

You can't be prosecuted for having an unassisted birth. Only a person acting as a midwife who is not qualified can be prosecuted but this only applies to someone acting in a professional capacity, as opposed to partners simply caring for their wives in labour.
Its true that people have been threatened with prosecution but the government recently confirmed their position on this.

The ABM and BFN and LLL all do breastfeeding counsellor courses too.
