I've recently (stopped taking anti-b's on monday) had mastitus too. Do i need to see my dr or can i buy something? i've also been freezing breastmilk does this need to be thrown away and if so when from? anymore advice?

Hot wash bras, muslins or anything else you've been using on your boobs.

I'm in the same situation and have started taking probiotics to try and counter the damage the antibiotics did.

If the cream doesn't work or if you get the stabbing/burning pain deep in the breasts, then the BFN, Kellymom and all the books recommend getting fluconazole. I couldn't get into see my GP so bought it at Boots today.

Fluconazole needs to be taken if there is deep breast pain frpm thrush but a high dose followed by a lower-dose course which is different to the Diflucan vaginal thrush one-dose tablet.

Here's what you need to know:

What organiccarrotcake said.

You'll need to treat your baby as well if it's nipple thrush, even if you can't see white patches in his mouth yet. For the baby get daktarin gel and put a tiny smear on your finger and rub all over his tongue/cheeks. Do NOT get nystatin drops as they do absolutely bugger all.

Daktarin cream for nipples is best as well, and the bf consultant I eventually paid to see (as GP etc were rubbish) said you don't have to wash it off before feeds.

Take the breastfeeding network leaflet with you to the GP if you have deep breast pain and demand the fluconazole. They are often reluctant to prescribe it because they often don't know much about treating nipple/breast thrush. I had to push and push to get mine prescribed and go back every week to get the next prescription (it took 4 or 5 weeks of taking fluconazole to finally kick the thrush).

Good luck and sending hugs as I know how much it hurts :( x

I dont think i have it 'bad',its more itchy and pink/red nipples. He's given me clotrimazole cream to put on my nipples and i asked for something for baby, he then perscriped nystan - i cant see anything in babys mouth so hopefully this will be enough. If it doesnt work i'll be going back askin for daktarin and fluconazole.
