My period started today, what does this mean?

Im probably paranoid, but I thought this meant the milk was drying up?

Baby is 5 weeks old and Ive been supplimenting on the advice of the midwives because baby wasnt gaining (2 bottles a day, he takes 2-3 ounces max). Although Ive been pumping inbetween to keep the milk up so I can return to breast only once he has started gaining.

Ive been getting much more milk when I express and baby seems much more content. Why would my period have started? (Only spotting so far)

don*t worry, that probably means that you are ovulating again. keep up the good work.

but you might want to get checked by a midwife or gp if you feel dizzy or get a fever, after 5 weeks it can still be lochia...

ronshar · 11/01/2011 20:21

It means you are fertile again and to be really careful or milk will be the least of your worriesSmile

Some women are unlucky and get their periods back quickly some dont. I dont know why, luck of the draw I suppose.

My periods came back really quickly after DCs 1 & 2 and I was still feeding all the time...and carried on for over a year so probably no need to worry.

Mammie81 · 11/01/2011 20:26

My lochia went really quickly. Its definately period as I can feel the ovulation (I always could)

Thank god, I was worried it was all over despite all the effort Ive put in! Thanks!

I got my 1st period 4 weeks after labour and i exclusivly bf

Expressing won't necessarily suppress ovulation quite as effectively as having the baby on the breast. Make sure you have contraception!

However if it's just spotting it could still be postpartum lochial loss triggered by the expressing; keep an eye on it and if the loss is smelly or clotty then do go to the GP.

I don't think restarting your periods causes your milk to dry up at all.

no, it doesn't mean your milk is drying up.

i got my period back 7 weeks post-partum with my first 2 babies and about 12 weeks PP with my third.

it does happen.

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/01/2011 20:55

I got a period 6 weeks after the birth, but haven't had one since! Still bfing 5 month old ds - just being careful about contraception.

Breastfeeding only stops your periods if you're feeding very frequently, and your baby has no bottles or dummies. Any big gap like sleeping a long period at night can be enough to restart things. Doesn't mean there's a problem with your milk though.

I exclusively bf all 3 of my older dc. (No FF top-ups, feeding through the night, blah-de-blah). Within 6 weeks of the birth...AF. Just be warned...sort out contraception, or you'll have a very small gap between LO's!

It's unusual, but it's 'normal' for me, an I am fully expecting it this time round (am due dc4 in 5 days).

I managed to feed DD for 6 months, DS1 for 4 months, and DS2 for 3 months. HTH.
