three and a half week old baby - noxious farts and tummy discomfort

My three and a half week old is mostly breastfed with formula topups on pediatrician advice due to weight loss. She has been farty since the beginning and they are really smelly.

We all got a sicky virus this weekend and the baby threw up for 12 hours but gp has seen her and she is mainly better now. Except yesterday and last night she clearly had tummy ache and trapped fart wind.

Giving her cooled boiled water eased it a bit and in middle of night i gave her brown sugar dissolved in boiled water as advised by many websites and old wives, and I let her sleep on her side which is only way she seemed comfortable.

But this am she is still farty (smellier than usual) and in some discomfort - any advice on how I can help her? I've done the tummy massage and leg cycling thing.

Gripe water?

Yellow think the only way you are going to help her is by feeding her. If you any of you have a bug then she will probably be getting antibodies in your milk which will help her recover more quickly.

Keep feeding and keep posting and let us know how you are getting on.

Might she be sensitive to the type of formula you're using?

I hope she feels better soon.

thank you - health visitor suggested infacol this afternoon and she has just had a long deep sleep so perhaps it has started workign already.

She's having less and less formula each day and pediatrician said we can wean her off ocmpletely when she reaches her birth weight which should be soon - phew!

Sorry your DD has been so poorly. Unfortunately the wind may not be connected to the tummy bug or to FF. My DD was EBF until 14 weeks and suffered from terrible wind which caused her great discomfort and kept her awake at night.

Shes now 6 months and its only in the last few weeks that the wind has stopped causing her a problem, now she can roll and crawl she can release the wind herself. Like your DD she was also bad lying on her back and sleeps better now she can roll herself onto her side and tummy.

We found infacol worked really well as did gripe water which you can use from 4 weeks. You could also try baby massage and continue bicycling her legs and gently pressing her legs into her abdomen to release any trapped wind whenever she is really upset.

Shes too young to be left on her tummy on the floor or in her cot but if you could give her tummy time on your chest while you are proppped up at a 45 degree angle that may help release the trapped wind as well.

thank you mousesma. i wonder if it something I am eating - last night she did three massive poos and only after that did she sleep - again on her side as she wouldn't let me put her down on her back, but within half an hour she put herself on her back. but she seems in agood mood today - so am I as we had a block of five hours sleep wahey!
