Baby screaming at feeding time

Hi.

My Baby screams in apparent pain at feeding time, particularly at her evening (7pm ish) feed. She arches her back and refuses to take the teat (I am FF). She does this at other feeds but not as bad as the evening. She has always been a little fussy, then we started giving her Dentinox which really helped for a while. Then we started on Colief which until now seems to have been doing a great job.

I thought that it might have been tiredness or that she wasn't hungry but she had plenty of sleep today and she should have wanted something then, even if not a whole feed. Also, when she has not been hungry before she just turns her head, not scream.

She had her 12 week jabs lst week and it does seem to have been since then, but as it was now 5 days ago, I think it should have worn off if that was the cause.

Any suggestions? I was reading about Reflux in yesterdays paper and wondered about that. Or, would she have displyed symptoms of that before now (she is 13 weeks now).

Thanks

is her mouth clear,as they can get thrush and it makes it really painful for them to drink.my grandson was the same,he wasnt too bad during the day and the went mad at the evening, shaking his head side to side, even though he was hungry,he is all sorted now thankgoodness.

Afraid I don't have any suggestions, but I am going through something similar with my DD (17 weeks) and it is hard going on us both, so you have my sympathies

I had the exact same problem, tried everything dentinox, colief, infacol, gripe water, medication for thrush and nothing helped - we finally tried gaviscon for reflux and it seems that was the problem. Didn't fix it entirely but feeds were so much more calmer and DS started increasing the amount of milk he would take (before he only had 2/3oz every couple of hours). Perhaps talk to your doctor and see what they suggest?

By the way it started around 6-8 weeks i think - feeding before this was fine for some reason?! Was also much worse towards the evening, i think because tiredness made it even more frustrating for him to drink.

Yes I agree with the Reflux suggestion. We had exactly the same with DD and Gaviscon was a little miracle worker. I would definitely give it a try because all the symptoms are there.

I managed to get some from my GP, but they were very reluctant to prescribe it as she was not being sick EVER. I know about silent reflux though. My dr thought it was just down to an immature digestive system and suggested a different formula/teat size

Thanks for your replies. Someone has suggested that she might be teething and that the action of sucking itself is causing the pain. I bought some Dentinox teething gel which I will try and see what happens. I will also ask the Health Visitor tomorrow when she comes to see what she thinks.

Tried the teething gel and it seemed to work for one feed, but this evening was bad as ever. It is horrible hearing her in what seems like so much pain.

I don't mean to press a point but I would seriously consider the Gaviscon because it sounds like Reflux. The behaviour is identical to our DD arching the back and it being much worse in the evening ,at its very worst she looked like she was vomiting water. Gaviscon made a world of difference, much happier Baby.

Am off to the Doctors this afternoon to try to get some!! If they refuse, then I'll buy it over the coiounter and pretend it is for a 1 year old! My health visitor watched me feed her today and agreed with Foofy that it is likely to be Reflux. It is horrible.

Hope they give you some. They should if you have the backing of your HV. Smile

I am in posession of 2 weeks worth of Gaviscon. I hope it works as things are starting to get really bad.

Thanks for all your advice

Hope it works. Fingers crossed Smile

Hi, do you knwo how long it takes for Gaviscon to kick in? She's been on if for 24 hours, and still no change. I assume that it needs to work for long enough to allow the throat to heal or soemthing like that. But, it doesn't seem to have stopped her doing "wet burps" - the kind where you expect some vomit but nothing appears. Thanks.

To be honest to a certain extent we still got those. Not all the time but they were definitely still there. It took a couple of days to properly make a difference but the obvious pain and refusal to feed stopped quite quickly. Keep with it. Smile
