Can what you eat while BFing give baby wind?

DS is 1 month and cries a lot due to wind, especially at night. Is there anything that might be causing it in my breast milk or is it an under developed digestive system?

Some people swear what they eat affects their baby think it is anecdotal rather than proven

Lots of babies are windy or have trouble bringing it up

Breast milk is the gentlest thing for babies tummies

curry, cabbage, maybe brocolli
are you letting your baby lie down on her tummy at times?

No I'm not, does that help? Smile

In DD's case I found out the hard way that eating windy foods kept my daughter screaming in pain until the early hours. I found I had to avoid peppers, baked beans and brussels sprouts. some babies are affected and some aren't. DD was, as were my sister's two children.

I don't understand how 'windy' foods can get through the breastmilk - surely they are 'windy' because of the fibrous stuff that the gut can't break down as well? How would that get into the system (blood or milk)?? I can see how drugs/alcohol could (that enters the bloodstream, so would get into milk too)

Just wondering...

There's some really good info on diet from Kellymom.

In my experience there was definitely a direct correlation between what I ate and whether DD had more wind. She was born slightly early and the midwife said that her gut may not have been fully developed. And the evening/night/early morning after I had eaten a pizza with peppers on was enough to convince me that sleep deprivation was too much to pay for one meal.

Personally I found that if I ate chilli peppers, DS seemed to have a sore tummy that night. Settled down with time so may have just been immature gut.

I did what most consider the wrong thing and my kids slept on their tummies from day one (they liked it I thought it was good for them)
never had problems with their digestion

try tummy massage too and keeep food diary
you may find some interesting correlations
