I have every intention of breast feeding except that i understand he might have trouble with it and we might need to bottle feed with formula/expressed as he will tire easily and might not be able to suck for very long.

Can anyone advise on a bottle that has a very easy to suck on teat??

I'm only saying this as I know NOTHING abour formula, but if for whatever reason he can't suck, could you express breast milk and give it to him in a bottle.

(I expressed for ds in SCBU, and my cousin expressed for 6 months dues to painful nipples that she couldn't overcome)

I just wanted to put this out there as an option in case you hadn't comsidered it. Smile

Hope all goes well for you.

The medela softcup feeder (can buy on Amazon or from mothercare) would be ideal as it won't interfere with breastfeeding but will be easy for your baby to feed from. The other thing to consider is the use of a nursing supplementer which would allow you to breastfeed but your baby would also get a free flowing supply of milk so would fill up quicker. Hope it all goes well for you.

My SIL had 2 babies with cleft palate, they were unable to form a complete seal to create suction and they had special soft squeezable bottles with long teats to start them off sucking and help them continue. I know its not quite the same thing but it might be worth asking the paediatrician if they have anything similar for babies in your situation.

Ethelina, those bottles that your SIL used are the softcup feeders by Medela.

Are they? Probably, her sons are 5 and 10 now she couldn't remember what she used.

thank you - that it just the info i was after! i don't know whether to get one in before baby is born or see how we get on and buy some if we run in to trouble. does the hospital give you a supplementer? i presume they don't give you bottles!
