is always painful?
My hairdresser is pregnant and really wants to breast feed. She was given the book by another client. She was really concerned by this comment. I have not read it though but was surprised as I don't believe this to be the case

.I don't believe this to be the case ie....that it is not always painful for the mother

The only times I've had pain (and even then, I'd actually say discomfort, not pain) was at the beginning, when I was persuaded to express milk to top him up and the machine left me with what I'd best describe as bruised-feeling nipples, and now that he's occasionally decided to try nipping me (something I've let him know isn't funny, in no uncertain terms)

And he's been feeding at least every 3 hours (sometimes shorter, very occasionally longer) for the last 5 months.

It varies though - some people have a harder time of it.

I'm sure she doesn't say that. I knew that book word for word a few years ago Blush Grin.

...after scanning my copy she says that if it's painful you need to get more advice / support.

it only hurt the first week. after that if it hurt it meant we weren't latched properly.

Yes breast feeding didn't hurt me at all (apart from Mastitus) and I would hate for this young mother to be put off..

You might like to do her a favour and buy her a more sensible book such as Kate Evans' The Food of Love. Smile

Oh I will suggest that thanks..

I had no pain whatsoever. I put it down to luck.

No. It stung for 7-10 days. After that completely painless and v. easy. No cracked nipples, mastitis or anything else. Still Bfeeding at 23 months.
