Formula and lack of poos

edwardscissorhands · 08/01/2011 03:50

My DS has had 1.5 days on formula alone, after I've been ebm for a few weeks and giving him a bottle of ebm a day - I haven't been able to do this since yesterday am. And he hasn't had a poo since about 3am Friday. It happened another day when he didn't get EBM.

Obviously his body is making the transition over to formula. When he did poo it wasn't constipated. But I did have to give him cooled boiled water to help him along.

Will this settle down and will he poo regularly on formula? How can I help this and how long will it take for him to settle on it? He has Aprimil.

I thought formula babies didn't poo as often as breast fed?

Don't know about that one mycousin, DD was BF and her record was 12 days!

My DD is on aptamil and regularly goes a day pr two without a poo, but I have never had to give plain water to get things moving, it's always just happened, in fact we had an epic poo yesterday which escaped from the nappy and soaked through vest and babygro.

i generally will settle down on its own. Her tummy just needs to get used to just formula.

if it doesn't you might need to try a different brand of formula or try the aptimil colic and constipation blend.

i dont know how successful this is but a friend swears by a pinch of brown sugar in the formula to help her little boy along when he was constipated.

You can also get lactalouse from the chemist which i think is safe to use from birth (might want to double check that) which will help get things moving.

Careful of putting sugar in - as I understand it, it acts as an irritant to tiny babies guts - which is why it works to move the poo along.

I had the nightmare of trying to get mine to poo too. I think the things you can do vary on age. The only thing I never tried was to change formula (I believed what someone told me when they said to stick to one and never change it - I hadn't found Mumsnet, obviously!!) - and now I would definitely try a different formula. You have my full sympathy!

Bf counsellor would not be able to help with a health issue of this sort, sorry, JJJ.

Worries about constipation related to formula would have to be put to the HV.

Really sorry about the confusing post. Managed to post it on the wrong thread.

Really must stop trying to post whilst cooking the tea Blush

Hiya
just to say my son was on ff from birth as i wasn't producing enough breast milk and he became really ill. I was told to give him cooled boiled water as he was straining to go, maybe 2oz/day to help him and told it's not constipation if his poo is soft, just sometimes can take a couple of days - breast fed can go for up to 5 days without going! If he hasn't gone by the 3rd day, i was told by my mw to try a teaspoon of orange juice (squeezed from an orange) in 1oz of cooled boiled water but be warned, he filled 2 nappies that afternoon - took about 12 hours to go through him!
My boy has aptimal and goes maybe every 2 days.
Hope this helps x
