Blisters on lower lip - sign of bad latch?

My little boy is 7 weeks old tomorrow, exclusively BF and has blisters on both his upper and lower lips. According to the booklet that came with the Bounty pack the one on his upper lip is quite normal. Trainee breastfeeding counsellor told me his lower lip is blistered because he is not latched on properly; however health visitor says it's quite normal and some bottlefed babies get them too. I'm getting so confused with everything BF-related as everyone seems to say something different. I've found it quite difficult so far (very painful cracked nipple on one side that still isn't healing up, baby wriggling and putting his arms in the way all the time when I'm trying to get him latched on) and it's quite dispiriting to think I still haven't got the hang of it properly. He must be getting enough milk into him though as his weight gain is fine.

My baby had blisters on her lower lip, they used to go away in between feeds then pop up again with each feed.
Sounds difficult for you, hope it improves soon. Have you tried swaddling to keep those pesky arms out of the way? Smile

I am not sure about the lip blisters (and the LLL Answer book says nothing) but the cracked nipple might well mean the latch isn't quite right. Can the trainee bf counsellor point you in the direction of someone more experienced? Or are there other groups in your area?

You're doing very well to carry on. It's a matter of both of you getting the hang of it - it can take some time.

Has anyone talked you through wet wound healing for the cracked nipple?
