My DD is 2 and turning into a really fussy eater despite havig previously eaten loads of fruit and veg. She will now only eat cucumber and tomatoes! Despite sneaking it into foods she spends her meal times picking out the 'lumps' grrrrrr. Am considering Growing Up Milk...any thoughts?

One of my boys had growing up milk the other didnt, to be honest they've both had phases of faddy eating, and thats when we used to give DS2 a cup of formula milk, totally psychologial for us I think, we told our selves it was okay he didnt eat his dinner because he's had all the extra vits and sugar from his FF!

however, I did read an article the other day about iron deficency, that said alot of children suffer when they go from Formula to cows milk because of the drop in Iron. Confused DS1 now age 5 does have an iron deficiency, but I think its more to do with his reluctance to eat healthy food than cows milk!

Definately get a vit supplement tho, esp at this time of year. Smile

Children nearly always have phases of picky eating - it's a developmental stage.

The iron in formula isn't easily accessed, even though there's loads in it compared to, say, breastmilk, which is where the confusion of BM not having enough iron used to come from. Yes, there is less in BM but it's the kind that the body can really use easily so (not a surprise) it's really the perfect amount.

Obviously for the non-breastfeeding mother this is not helpful but if a child was iron deficient and absolutely refusing iron rich foods I would supplement with iron, not a broad-spectrum formula as it can cause more problems.

Even a bowl of fortfied breakfast cereal may have enough iron and vits to not need anything else, and most children will eat cereal.
