switching from breast to bottle

My dd is 11 weeks old. Been trying to give bottle of ebm or formula in order to gradually wean her from breast to bottle. using avent bottles and teats but she wont feed from them and either screams when they go near her mouth or if more relaxed then will allow them to roll around her mouth for a while but wont suck. she has drunk ebm from same bottles at around 4-5 weeks for a couple of feeds with no prob so why not now? have tried dh feeding her but no better results. any advice?

I have got to try and get ds onto a bottle for when I leave him for the night (sob)
I Have be advised about MAM teats, more breast like apparently. You can put them on the Avent bottles although you can't put Avent teats on Mam bottles IIRC.

thanks whimsywhoo. i will try these teats and see if any luck. have you tried the bottle at all yet? are you going to wean fully to bottle or just the odd one? be interested to hear any tried and tested methods of transferring gradually from one to the other.

Well he has had a bottle 3 times. The last time we tried Dh said he wouldn't have the EBM from the bottle but would drink formula
I want to continue breast feeding but need to give him the odd bottle aswell. Will be interested to see if anyone as any advice for you

we use the tomme tippe dimpled nuby bottles for dd3 when she has EBM. she wont take EBM from avent bottles.

mam ulti teats

We had this exact same problem. We got ds1 to take a nuk latex teat and he's really got the hang of it. He HATED avent teats. We are giving him a bottle of formula at 1030pm but will take it at other times but found initally that the 6pm feed a disaster in regards to the bottle HTH I have heard changing from breast to bottle to do change one feed every few days so you adjust gradually!

I have found the mam teats very good
DS didn't seem able to work out how to get the milk out of the avent ones
tommee tippee were better that avent but mam were even softer

Are you in the room when he is trying to feed her?

Mojomummy · 03/10/2005 19:42

when babies feed from the NUK teats they use the same mouth action as they do on the breast. Also the latex is much softer.

You can buy some ones from Superdrug for about £2 I think.

Thanks for all the advice. she got on better with the mam teats so i will persevere with them. now i just need to lick the lots of crying and no sleeping through the day problem!

Hi there
I'm also in the process of trying to wean ds off breast feeding. Haven't had any success yet. Going through process of trying different formulas and teats at the mo - sadly ds isn't playing ball. Did try giving formula in lid of bottle and that seemed to work but I'm a bit loathed to go from breast to beaker. Has anyone else found this?

I gave up trying a bottle and went straight to a cup at about 7 months. I found the heinz baby basics range the best. Would also recommend goats milk formula as it's easier to digest than the standard brands. Nanny ios available from health food shops but is a bit more expensive

my dd finally seems to drink happily from the avent bottles with mam teats but only after i made a discovery! I found that the milk flowed freely out of the teats for about 10 seconds before stopping and then behavibg more like a nipple and having to be squeezed gently to get milk out. I think this is why we were having problems as she was gagging on the milk at first and so it put her off. now we just empty off a small amount before we start the feed and it seems to be fine. might be worth trying.
