What size and type of teat for bf newborn?

4 day old baby, trying to bf (have managed so far but it's not easy is it?). Am ordering NUK glass bottles for the occasional expressed bottle, from amazon and have no idea what size and type of teat. Assuming latex? Size 2? Baby was 6 lb 8 oz at birth, has a good strong suck but is lazy latching. I think 120ml bottles will be fine for now.

Would appreciate teat advice please.

I use the tommee tippee ones, so no idea about other bottles, but the general thing is that you should use a slowest flow teat so that baby doesn't prefer the bottle to you.

Ok that makes sense. It seems the flow rate us indicated by the number of drip symbols is that right, so I would go for one with a single drip? And then does size mean the physical size of the teat so a size one would be right for a newborn? Thanks

I'm fairly sure all teats (in one range) are the same size as an average nipple but yes, a size 1 teat will be right flow-wise for a newborn. I would try to avoid latex teats as some people are allergic to latex. Trey silicone instead.

I used variable flow avent teats with ds1 as my midwife advised they were more like feeding from a breast, ie the harder they suck the faster the flow. Ds2 was harder to pursuade to use a bottle and i had to try a few different types. We eventually got on best with breastflow bottles and teats, these only have 2 flow rates so i went with slow flow.

It is tough in the early days but it does get easier. Try to hold out at least a couple of weeks if you can before trying a bottle, some babies can get a bit confused in the early days. If you are feeling a strong suck make sure baby is opening its mouth really wide before latching on. Well done for getting this far.

Thanks for the help, will go with silicone and either size one or the variable flow ones. Will start a new thread for advice on my naughty left breast which may be blocked. Thanks again.
