No poo since Thursday (EBF)

Hopefully one of you wise ladies can help me.

Ds2 is 3wks old and as title suggests is having some nappy issues.

HV saw him on Wednesday (28th) as he had not had a dirty nappy since Boxing Day. At the time she suggested massaging his tummy, cycling his legs and giving him 2oz of water and advised me to see the GP if there was nothing by the following morning.

Following morning (Thursday) there was nothing so i got an appointment for the GP to see him. Got to the surgery and you can guess what happened. DS produced the most toxic nappy I have seen. GP not too impressed and basically made me feel like I had overreacted and was being PFB.

Since then there has been no more poo forthcoming despite following HV advice again.

He is feeding relatively well (on demand BF), gaining weight ok and is pumping A LOT which is a bit smelly.

Am I worrying over nothing or should I be worried?

Sorry this is long but I wanted to make sure I included everything.

I'm shocked that your HV told you to go to the gp after 3 days!
It's v normal for bf babies to go a week or so between poos, he won't be constipated if ebf. Please don't worry (but do make sure you always have a spare change of clothes for him with you as when he goes it could be messy :o)

Fwiw my HV told me to wait til 2 weeks before worrying about it.

Hi - I don't know the answer, but just wanted to say not to worry. Mine was very constipated as a small baby - I took her to the drs after she hadn't been for a week (had seen HV on a Friday and she suggested going to GP on the Monday) - and she decided to drop a weeks worth of poo whilst the dr held her.

All they suggested was to give water, then when she was a bit older (I can't remember exactly when though) squeezed orange juice and brown sugar in water.

I think if it persists perhaps push for more medical advice. Particularly if he seems uncomfortable or in pain with it. I think they can help with laxatives - but I'm not sure at what age.

Mine was constipated until she went onto solids at about 6 months. She still had some problems if we weren't careful with her diet up until the age of 4. (We went on holiday with friends for a couple of weeks and were eating on the hop a lot - she got quite bad then).

Now she's 5 - I give her a lot of fruit and veg and she's fine.

Mine would regularly go about 6 days between poops when they were ebf. Only had constipation problems after started weaning onto food (stupid baby rice to blame methinks).

I used to keep track of when the last poop was and then dress them in something I didn't really like on day 6!

I would seek a second opinion, others on here may know more and correct me but I can't see why a 3wk old breastfed baby would need to drink a bottle of water? Think your HV sounds like a loon!

Thanks for the advice.

It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all and he has been pumping very frequently which have a very strong smell (he could empty a room!).

I dont remember being this obsessed with poo with DS1 (but there is an 8yr age gap so the memories are a bit hazy)

DS could regularly go for upto a week without & you could usually tell when he was getting ready for one as he seemed more uncomfortable (usually more restless at night). If I thought he needed some help I'd drink lots of orange juice but it didn't always work! He's a bit more regular now he's on solids but still mostly bf so it can still be a few days.

I think unless he's clearly in pain with it then he'll poop when he's ready & there's not a lot the doc could do.
