Bibs abd breastfeeding

hazchem · 01/01/2011 19:13

I'm just getting together the stuff i need for my first baby.

I've read that I need bids for the baby if i'm breastfeeding.
Is that right?

Do i put them on when the baby is having a feed?

I'm really trying not to buy a whole load of stuff that i don't need.

Never used a bib, but muslins are quite useful.

Guacamohohohole · 01/01/2011 19:17

I bought loads, never used them at all for breastfeeding. I do use them now he's weaned, but IME breastfeeding is not messy and didn't need bibs. You'll need muslins though for spit up.

pozzled · 01/01/2011 19:18

I was given loads and loads of bibs. Never needed them for bfing, only a few for weaning. Muslins definitely useful though.

yama · 01/01/2011 19:20

Didn't use for either of my dc whilst breastfeeding.

FingonTheValiantReindeer · 01/01/2011 19:21

I didn't buy them, but was given quite a few. I thought they were pointless, but DS is a messy breastfeeder and I've been glad to have them.

If I were you I'd just get muslins, I think they're the kind of thing people buy you. If they do, great, if they dont, no loss - if you see what I mean.

mawbroon · 01/01/2011 19:23

I never used bibs for breastfeeding. I think i did for the first few days with ds1 and realised they weren't really neccessary.

thisisyesterday · 01/01/2011 19:23

i've never used a bib while breastfeeding a baby.
muslins come in handy just in case they're sick or anything, but they're useful for all kinds of other stuff too

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 01/01/2011 19:24

Yes I used bibs to breastfeed, I found them very useful to mop up leaky breasts, a fast let down ( which had actually sprayed milk right across the room and hit the TV on the wall! DP's face was a picture!) and the posseting that babies do. Sometimes he would bring up a lot of sick with a burp and it was handy to have a bib to catch it. They are cheap enough so why don't you buy a pack and see how you get on?

ethelina · 01/01/2011 19:46

Muslins are brilliant multi purpose squares of cloth used to protect clothes while feeding, to catch spit up and puke, as a comforter, a lightweight cover for impromptu naps, the list goes on and on.
Bibs are single purpose uncomfortable pointless wastes of material which you will probably use once and quietly stick in the back of the drawer. Until they wean of course, then they're great.

lal123 · 01/01/2011 19:49

I used bibs and muslins when bfing - both my dds were very sicky. I had thousands of bibs - went through loads

Cies · 01/01/2011 19:51

I was given some tiny bibs when ds was born. Never used them. They were too small to be any good when it was time to wean him. But muslins were great.

NineLadiesDancingThroughLife · 01/01/2011 19:51

Shock Breastmilks - I see where you get your name from now Grin

I had a few, but never needed them for bfing. Muslins did the job for us. I know people who find them useful though. Bibs are great now while we're introducing solids.

TruthSweet · 01/01/2011 20:47

I did use bibs for dribble/reflux or if bfing when out I swung the bib around (kinda hip-hop baseball hat stylee if you will ) to provide a little bit extra coverage.

E.g. if feeding on right hand boob I moved the bib around so that the front bit of the bib was more on the baby's right shoulder so when feeding the bib stood up a bit and shielded me if I was top down feeding or baby was in a 'lift mummy's top up' mood. Bit less noticeable then a massive hooter hider Grin

They aren't by any means essential though and you might find you don't need any bibs until solids are started.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 01/01/2011 22:08

NineLadies- Yes indeed, now you know WinkGrin

I've always found bibs get in the way when trying to breastfeed, but they are very useful for dribbly babies such as mine to stop them soaking through their clothes. They're particularly useful when the baby is upright, eg in his door bouncer or bumbo chair. Now we've just started solids and I think we need the more hardcore plastic cover-all bibs!

mairmaid · 01/01/2011 23:12

I found muslins much better than bibs as DS breastfeeding can possett beyond range of a bib. Weaning now very tidily and neonate bibs too small. Best thing I got for breastfeeding were washable breastpads (only nec. if leakage is a problem). Reusable ones were so scratchy. My local pharmacy doesn't stock them on the shelves any more so need to order them in. Good luck with everything!

Mammie81 · 01/01/2011 23:25

I wouldnt buy them myself, we got hundreds as gifts and Ive not used one!

pooka · 01/01/2011 23:29

I didn't use them for dd or ds1 until they were eating solids. Muslins sufficed.

DS2 however was a puker. Used muslins but bibs were absolutely essential from early days right until he was about 9 months. Otherwise would have to change clothes loads of times.

The Sillybillyz bibs were the best. Wash like a dream, nice colours and waterproof backing meant sick didn't soak through.

But hopefully your baby wont be as pukey as ds2!

hazchem · 02/01/2011 13:11

wanted to say thanks for the advice. I've ordered a whole load of muslins as intending to use as first nappies. i think i'll keep one colour just for breastfeeing then.
hipfully mine wont be to pukey!
