Nursing strike - aargh!

My DS is 24 weeks and in the last couple of weeks has been very distractible when feeding. This afternoon i can't get him to feed at all. he seems hungry and is rooting, but when i put him to the breast he arches his back away and cries. He is teething so we've given him calpol but it hasn't made much difference. normally he nurses to sleep for his daytime naps but today aft5er crying for ages he fell asleep on me. i managed to feed him a bit as he was waking up, but as soon as he was fully awake that was it. right now we are doing skin to skin and will take him for a bath with me in a bit.

we have just started weaning and he loves it so am wondering if that's it - why have boring old milk when solid food is so exciting? that's only been a couple of days though, and all he's had today is a suck on a stick of carrot and some broccoli, so it's not as if he's filled up on it.

any other suggestions? he doesn't have bottles (won't take them). i might have to express in a bit to ease the fullness!

Definitely express if it makes you more comfortable.

Sorry your DS is being awkward re. bfing sometimes they just find life so exciting that bfing takes a bit of a back seat.

You can work around that though with bfing in quiet dim rooms, feeding whilst they are sleepy (maybe rocking them whilst topless Wink) or sometimes having a toy to occupy their hands helps.

Well it did for one of mine - I had a bfing necklace I would let her play with whilst she fed and only while she fed so it made her a bit keener to feed [she might have been a bit older though ~6m]).

As per usual Kellymom.com has some good advie and tips here

Good luck and fingers crossed for a swift return to normal service Grin

well, in the end I gave him a bath and he fed straight after while wrapped in a towel off the worst side. Then I took him to bed and he had a really good long feed and has gone to sleep (for now - I'm sure he'll wake up just as our steaks are cooked). I'm awash with oxytocin happy feelings and am now on the sofa with a big glass of wine. Happy new year!

Happy New Year to you too. Enjoy those wine and oxytocin rushes!

Teething makes my DD hard to feed. Not normally enough to cause a full on strike, but certainly close. Enjoy your wine.

Proper nursing strikes are hell. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed we don't have another one.

I bet. Hopefully this won't turn into a full blown one, but today was not a good day.

am thinking of holding off on the weaning for another couple of weeks in case that's the cause.

am on the bailey's now - that has to be good for breastmilk, no?

Definitely Grin

It's not midnight for another 8 hours here yet, but I might start with a sneaky drink now.
