could formula or feeding lying down give DS wind?

DS is 2 weeks old and I breastfeed him but give him a bottle of Hipp organic at night before bed as well as waking in the night to breastfeed him while lying down. He's become really unsettled at night with wind, could it be from either of these things?

By wind do you mean he is passing wind (farting) or burping? Or do you mean he is crying a lot and seems unhappy?

Feeding lying down, AFAIK, wouldn't cause wind but bottle feeding (regardless of substance in the bottle) could if air was getting in the teat instead of milk (possibly due to angle bottle held at or baby sucking on an empty bottle).

he's farting and tummy gurgling

agree with TS that it's really unlikely to be feeding lying down that is causing it

i would try cutting out the formula feed and seeing what happens. it may be that the bottle is giving him wind... do you burp him afterwards? or that he is just struggling a bit with the formula (which is harder to digest)

Probably the formula in my experience - I first tried giving my ds the occasional bottle at about 5 weeks I think and it made him very farty and uncomfortable. Stopped and tried again at about 3 months and he seemed to cope with it much better.

Make sure there is always milk in the teat and try to feed the formula propped up a bit. Also are you using newborn teats - the wrong size can also cause discomfort.
I did the same feeding method as you some nights and was using the wrong teats!

I do burp him afterwards, he always looks a bit dopey after a bottle feed though so I guessed it may be harder for him to digest. Going to cut out the formula feed tonight and see how it goes

Just to let you know he slept a lot better last night without the bottle!

Excellent! Long may it continue.

|I am sure it is a bottle, breast milk is a lot milder and if you were breastfeeding him in a first place, I think you should stick to that.

My DD used to get terrible painful wind when I breastfed her lying down and she would be waking all night from painful farts.

Shes grown out of it now but it took her until 6 months to do so.
