underwired bras

are underwired bras a complete no-no when breastfeeding? I have a few non-wired and feeding bras but don't feel they give me a decent shape - I'm a 36 J so struggle to find choice. More choice is available in underwired bras.

I switched to underwire when ds was about 14 months I think and have had no problems. Before then I would have been nervy about it - I was always getting blocked ducts anyway. I think there are now some underwired bras designed or breastfeeding, maybe you could look at those?

I think the issue is, if you're breastfeeding, your breasts change size quite a bit, and underwires need to be properly fitted.

That being said, I suspect smaller boobs change size more, and I know that boobs change size a lot less when you've been breastfeeding for a while.

suzi2 - yes there is a risk of blocked ducts. Like you I am ahem well endowed and I only started to wear under wired bras again when I was down to 2/3 feeds a day, probably when dd about 12 months. and even then I still check for blockages pretty thoroughly.
Have you tried bravado?
they are pretty good and supportive for the larger bosom...

Ive just looked at the bravado bras and they dont go as far as a J cup

Mine were by a company called Royce - and mine were 36L and gave a pretty good shape all things considered. John Lewis sell them at £25 and I found their fitting service excellent!

That said, you're not far off the size I had (might be a tad baggy but not much!) so do you want one of the ones I had to give them a go to see if you like the look??

It's the Royce bras I'm wearing -they just seem to do nothing for me. But as far as I am aware, there is little else available in my size. I've just spotted an Emma Jane one so might try that...

when i did a search on the internet for larger size breastfeeding bras there was a bravado bra called the supreme bra that went up to at least a j cup. think you have to ring them thought rather than being able to just order it online.

Blooming Marvelous have an underwired feeding bra. I think it was designed by Elle McPherson. I love it. I am an E cup.

Hi Suzi - yes, I spotted that on another thread!! I have 1 unused white and 1 once used white - I wore the black for 8 weeks, as I really liked the shape it gave me!!!! Horses for courses and all that lot I guess

Think I switched back to underwire bras at about 8 months only when I was going out though, reckoned a few hours a day wouldn't hurt too much, it was such a relief to have a nice bra on again!

Dont know if this helps but when I went to Bravissimo (shop for those of us with big knockers) to have a maternity bra fitted the lady there told me that underwires were fine as long as correctly fitted because in a properly fitting bra the wire shouldnt actually touch your boob it is underneath and around the side....Its only when people wear the wrong size that there is problems. The shop i went to is in Leeds and i know they have one in Manchester too...its not cheap but was excellent.
