Defrosted milk seems to be off

I've spent many hours hunched over, squeezing out those extra ounces so that dh can feed ds when needed. Trouble is, ds more often than not refuses the milk and by the next morning, despite being in the fridge overnight, it seems to be off. I'm not storing it for too long (only up to 3 months in a separate freezer).

Does anyone else have this?

Sounds like a lipase deficiency... Have a search for this on Google. I had the same problem myself - couldn't find a solution.

I think it's too MUCH lipase you need to look for actually. Does it taste soapy?

moondog · 30/09/2005 17:22

How exactly does it seem off?

beansprout · 30/09/2005 17:24

Lordy, what's that? Could only find fairly complicated medical journal type stuff. Do I need to worry or is it just a PITA?

It seems off because it has an odd smell. Usually my milk has no smell at all. I've only tasted a bit but it has that odd taste that off milk has (sorry, that's not very descriptive is it?!)

Well it should be ok (I know mine looked weird when it came out of the freezer and hell,I wouldn't have had it for my evening meal but babies were happy enough.)

Is it right in the back of the freezer? Maybe check that temp is ok if you're worried.

(I had a hell of a time expressing too! It killed me to see a drop wasted! Someone on here was so irritated that her baby didn't want her bottle of EBM that she reheated it and used it to make a big mug of hot chocolate!)

Hey that was me!

It really drove me up the wall.

Try tasting it before and after freezing - it's the only way to tell.

Moongdog is right about the looks btw - it often separates and looks weird. Tasting is the only way to test it.

I had this problem too. Don't defrost in the fridge overnight. Just defrost in warm/hot water right before use. That eliminated the problem for me. (I think it is something to do with the lipase cos I have the same problem if I store bmilk in the fridge more than 24 hours... the longer its stored, the more off it smells.) Some babies don't mind but mine is particular and just likes it fresh (or freshly defrosted)

Definately OK just to defrost milk in hot water immediately before use - it is normal for the milk to seperate. Just shake it.
