How to improve evening supply?

Knittynoodle · 21/12/2010 16:36

Baby feeds much more regularly in the evenings and Im told its because the flow is less/supply is less in the evening.

Why is this, and what can I do? ie, do I have loads of milk in the mornings because Ive been laying down and could something like that improve the evening feeds.

Id also like an excuse to lay down Wink

It's just natural fluctuation, sorry. The extra evening feeds help maintain supply, but don't worry, it really wont be like this forever.

Settle down with a few good DVDs / laptop / book / tea / cake etc. and try to make the most of being able to sit still, the time will come when you look back on the evenings of cluster feeding and miss them. Honestly.

I was told once by a mw to eat cake at 4pm. Now I have no idea if this works or not but I followed it to the letter Wink

This is most people's experience, Knitty - the fuller feeling in the morning is prob because of night time prolactin which is higher and because the breasts have not been 'used' for a longer time. The 'cluster' feeding in the evening is because that's the pattern many babies seem to enjoy.

Lying down will make no difference, and it's normal anyway - it does not mean you actually produce less in the evening, but rather that frequent feeding does not permit build up of milk. You have the right amount for your baby, and in the evening he likes to have it often :)

Cake is fine, but it is an illusion that it makes any difference, sorry!

No but it makes it much more fun, eh Wink.

Any excuse as far as I'm concerned!

Agree with Organic, probably makes no difference at all but will definitely make you feel better Xmas Smile

Tiktok- OP, Sorry for the hyjack but I was wondering if tiktok could give me some advice regarding soreness I am feeling at the moment?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and am feeding my toddler who is 27 mths and ever since falling pregnant breastfeeding has become very sore to the point where I am having to impose a time limit on his feeds and I hate to do this.

I hit the roof everytime he latches on and my nipples throb for a while after. Is this just normal, pregnancy tenderness or do you think I could have thrush or something else?

BBreastmilk - there is a tndem nursing support thread somewhere on here if you want to search - or start a new thread and those of us who have nursed through pregnancies could probably answer your Qs :)

WoTmania · 22/12/2010 10:12

OP - the best way to improve evening supply is to feed them lotsin the evening Grin. Sorry.

It does gradually even out (IME anyway) to the point where suddenly you are free to do the washing up of an evening and start to wonder how to get them to cluster feed again.

Breastmilkisonme - best to start another thread. Meantime call any of the bf lines - you may get some good help there.

Ok thanks I will.
