Taken into hospital and my poor bf son

I was taken into hosp yesterday with pancreatitis developed from stuck gallstone v angry as gallbladder op last week was cancelled. My son is just over 10mths. Ebf and take juice but no formula or bottle. From what docs said, iv antibiotics and what I have git make it virtually impossible to bf. So worried about him. Whats best way to handle this?

Oh poor you.
I wish I'd known all about this when I had meningitis when ds was 4mths and bf.
He went cold turkey unfortunately as I was 'out of it'

I even remember waking up once and apart from the head and stiffness etc. of meningitis my engorged breasts were killing m,e. The first words I said to the doc. was 'I need a midwife' He thought I was delirious and called the nurse over and I got sedated again!

Good luck you sound as if you and your dh are working it out.

Are you allowed out of the ward (ha! 'allowed', you're not a prisoner are you, it's up to you what you do. I guess I mean are you well enough to walk?). Could you meet someone in the canteen and feed there at least once?

I hope you get well soon Smile.

mummynumnums - I really hope you are on the mend now and your op is scheduled soon. Beware the knock on effects of the massive amounts of IV fluids hung and water they push you to drink when you have pancreatitis. It is definitely needed to get you better but I found it made me 'water-logged' and may have helped reduce my supply whilst in hospital.

Though DD3 had formula the first time I was in hospital, we didn't give her any once I was home and my supply bounced right back (she would have been about 28/29 weeks then and still ex.bf) so at 10m you may not need to supplement once home if your DS is well on solids. Again, good luck for the op and don't forget you can bf/express as soon as you are conscious after a GA (you may not be up to it but if you are you can).

mamas12 - I read your comment to DH and it nearly made him cry at the thought of you being so helpless and the Drs not understanding a normal physiological condition. I mean I bet you were catheterised whilst sedated, they didn't let you just wee the bed or for you to get a bladder infection from not emptying your bladder but were happy to ignore your lactating breasts Confused What's up with that? Not having a go at you of course just the DrsShock!

Think as nasty bug in here can't really go out and baby can't come here. He is 10mths and doing ok at home without me. Hope he will pick up feeding when get home.

Aww thanks for that, yes even though it was a while ago now I still get angry at the fact that my symptoms of meningitis were treated but I wasn't treated as a whole person with other circs going on in my life eg bf my baby.

mummynumnum hope you get to see him soon and I'm sure as you are determined that it wiil work for you.

Right! Op cancelled for third time today. Have discharged me as pancreas settled with op in 2wks time. Asked doc about resuming breastfeeding. He said wait 48 hours to get out of system. My ds is gonna love that. Any thought? I was on augmentin, metradazole and omeraprozole.

Ring the BFN helpline. They have been extremely helpful every time I speak to them.

gummymum · 23/12/2010 18:24

Get them to bleep the obstetric registrar to check meds, and switch to breastfeeding compatible ones. Very few medications are contraindicated for BF and certainly metronidazole, augmentin, diclofenac are all fine.
They are likely to have alternatives so insist they use them.

mummynumnum · 23/12/2010 18:58

Nurse looked in book and said augmentin and metronidazole is fine like you said gummynum
