Burning nipples = thrush??

On day 5 of a course of anti-biotics for mastitis. Today I noticed my nipples were really sore during one feed and whilst my nipples are not in a great condition it's usually just the latch in which they hurt (HVs and BFCs and MW all checked latch and say it's fine but think I have had a few bad ones which is delaying healing) Anyway, the nipple is a bit pink around the base of the nipple and it burns for about an hour after the feed.

Friends have said thrush is really painful and this is okay just really uncomfy and the burning unpleasant. Does it sound like thrush and can you get it this soon after starting anti-biotics? What would the treatment be and how long would it take to heal?

Also I know some people who go in a cycle of mastitis and thrush and mastitis. I understand how thrush is related to mastitis (by taking anti-biotics) but what about the thrush - does this mean you'll get mastitis again?

Thanks in advance, midwife coming tomorrow so going to get her to check my nipples.

I had thrush and my nipples were just pink and itchy - my ds had it much worse than me. Treatment took ages for us, but what worked in the end was canestan for my nipples, daktarin gel for ds's mouth, and a canestan hydrocortisone cream for ds's bottom (he got a thrush nappy rash).

I caught thrush from my DS, and never got mastitis. It wasn't even that painful, as you said it was just uncomfortable and unpleasant, at the time I was on two different anti-biotics because of infection. I had tablets and My DS was given drops so we didn't cross infect (but bonjela seemed to clear it up quicker in the end for him, along with the drops) it clears up in a few days but the treatment is 3-4 days longer just to be sure. Neither of us have had any problems since!
