How to get dd2 to stop falling asleep at thr breast everytime? And how to know when she is actually done?

I've got really in the habit of feeding dd2 all the time, at the slightest sign of crankiness or boredom. She's not alway hungry but never refuses. Part of the problem is I never know if she is full a feed as she very often falls asleep at the breast. Mum's all night diner is her favourite place to be 'or Titty Lodge as my MIL calls it Xmas Grin).

It's very temping to just try and stuff her all day on the hope that she will go longer at night (she won't) & she doesn't sleep great in the day and barely at all in the evenings. I am wondering if more of routine might help. I mean it in the loosest sense of the word, more just seeing if she will go longer between feeds (I know she can). But that's difficult when I don't really know when she has has a full feed.

Sorry this is a bit waffly bit does anyone have any tips at all?

How old is she?

I didn't really find we had much of a routine until 4 months, before then I just fed whenever. If ds fell asleep at the breast I put him down - either he'd sleep, or he'd wake up and I'd offer the other side.

My dd improved when I went a bit longer between feeds and got her to nap prior, she was really tired and a poor feeder, being rested meant she had both the hunger and the energy to motivate better feeding. I work to a schedule first 2 hour then 3 now 4, not what I intented but wieght problems meant I had to know I was getting desired no of feeds in during 24 hour periods, I intended to demand feed but in our case the routine works better.

DS was very similar a few weeks ago (now 3.5 months) and I did start a bit of a routine. Basically I try to get him to have a nap when he's been awake for 1.5-2 hours (I put him in the pram, sometimes walk him and sometimes use the hoover to soothe him to sleep). I try to give him a big feed roughly every 3 hours but give shorter feeds in between if he's grumpy and can't be easily soothed any other way (after a few days of this he rarely needed feeds between the 3 hourly ones).
We started putting him to bed about 7.30 (was previously more like 10) too which is working well (although he generally has 3 feeds between then and morning).
Is hasn't improved his night sleeping but he's much happier in the day for having regular naps and it's great to have a bit of evening to oursleves.
Hope this is helpful!
