How long does the toe curling latching on last for?

DS2 is nearly 4 weeks old and is thriving but it's still a bit excruciating when he latches on. Toe curlingly so for about 30-60 secs.

Usually settles during the feed although he can keep going for what seems like forever sometimes (20 mins +) and it gets sore so I prise him off with my little finger and he generally falls into a milky slumber.

I really struggled with bf related pains for 1st few months with DS1 (now 2.6) although persevered.
He still asks for Mummy milk at bedtime and his latch is pain free.

I think the painful latching on is relatively common and would be very grateful for any advice.

TIA

Sorry no advice, but my toes are well & truely curled too ! Same with all 3 dc's.

Is it the latch or let down? My let down is really painful in the beginning. Dd2 is 12 weeks and we have been mostly pain free for about a month.

Bf stopped being painful for me around 8 weeks. DS is 5 months old now and to quote someone I read on here I could now feed him hanging upside down from a tree no bother Xmas Grin

Thanks all.

I think it's just the latch Iwas, let down is different and not really painful, whereas latching on is teeth grittingly sore.

Reassuring that it should all settle down in a few weeks, I think maybe when his mouth is a bit bigger his latch should improve.

Lansinoh and curled toes until the New Year at least, can't wait for us to be hanging from trees Grin

About six weeks for me - the toe curling went from having to count to twenty, to ten, then eventually not being sore at all.

Now I'm another who could do it hanging from a tree, 12 months on.It DOES get better.

hi, ive posted a few times about my feeding (thrush x2, mastitis x2, open wound - the lot!)

DD is now 7 weeks and pain is easing..

you're on your way :)

ps. baby cafe helped millions x

DinosaurRumpus · 18/12/2010 20:06

DC4 is 5 weeks today and in the last day or two I've found that the toe-curling sensation of the first few sucks is just starting to ease!
Let down, though, is still agony....

Dozeyland · 18/12/2010 20:35

let down too is still horrid for me too

HappySeven · 18/12/2010 21:52

Reading your post I realise I can't remember. It was AWFUL to start with and I found the let-down painful too (like I was electrified?) but both are fine now. DD is now 8 months and I realise it all stopped ages ago. About 6 weeks I'm guessing. Sorry, not much use but at least you can think "one day it will be a distant and dull memory" (and I wouldn't have believed me either).

Restrainedrabbit · 18/12/2010 21:56

Dd1- about 8-10 weeks
DS- 6 weeks
Dd2 - 2 weeks

Hi have a look are your nipple when it comes out the baby's mouth it should look the same as it went in altho a wee bit longer. If your nipple is a bit squashed or like a lipstick shape it could be that the baby isn't getting a good mouthful of breast. Chin should come into the breast first and baby's nose should be free taking a good mouthful of breast under the nipple. I found the National Breastfeeding helpline really good 0300 100 0212 [smile}

Have to ask those who have said let down hurts - Is it in both breasts? When DS latches one one side the other side lets down painfully also. Just wondered is this normal? Is it related to oversupply? As I think I have it. Thanks.

HappySeven · 19/12/2010 15:55

firstforthought, yes it was in both breasts but I definitely didn't have oversupply. I used to use the simultaneous let-down to my advantage though and express on the other side while I fed as it was much faster.
