will nipple thrush harm my baby

I have struggled with thrush whilst breastfeeding, finally got rid of it after months with lots of drugs only for it to reappear. Decided to go to formula, but want to breastfeed at least once a day to keep up baby's immunity. I'm fed up with appling creams to nipples, gels into babys mouth etc, its been going on for so long and they don't work for me. Question is, will it harm me or baby to carry on feeding with thrush and not treating it.

I have it at the moment and am trying daktarin after 2 failed rounds of Nystan (even though doctor would not prescribe it) What have you been using? Doctor now told me to just leave it as it will go on its own so I can't see it would be harmful otherwise they would not have told me that. Then again I know that it can get into their digestive system and onto their bottom so I am not too sure. It is soooo annoying!

If your baby doesn't have a sore mouth/bottom I should think it's fine. My ds got a really bad thrush nappy rash from in, was awful and weepy/bleeding so obviously couldn't leave it untreated - but if the baby doesn't have symptoms I should think it's fine.

It's awful to get rid of though isn't it? Think it took us 8 weeks of creams/gels/boil washing everything etc to shift it.

well, it will be very painful if left untreated

Thanks for advice. I tried clotrimazole cream for me for 2 weeks with no improvement. Only fluconazole tablets for a week and then a higher dose for another week got rid of it, but as I said, it came back after about 2 weeks. The fluconazole is n ot licensed in the UK for breastfeeding mums, so you would have to have a sympathetic GP.
My baby does not appear to have thrush in his mouth so must be fighting it well, probably due to the immunity he's getting from breastmilk.
I'm quite upset at having to stop feeding but feel I have reached the end of the road with it (I have had other problems too). The thrush really is a bugger, I just don't think we are able to take all the scrupulous hygiene measures necessary to eliminate it, especially as I have 3 other children. I don't want to be paranoid about hygiene any more, my hands are raw from all the scrubbing as it is.

yackity, thrush is often over-diqagnosed. latch problems often show identical symptoms

have you seen a breastfeeding counsellor to rule this out?
