only one breast producing much milk...

DS seems only to get much milk from my left boob. He gives up and goes to sleep early on the right. Right boob is also the most sore for me to feed from.

Have tried expressing from the right, and I can only get about 20ml out before it 'dries up' (takes about 10 minutes). I get a lot more from the left boob.

Is there something I can do to encourage more milk in the right? At the moment I am thinking I will put him always on the right boob first, then move him to the left to satisfy him (I hope...), then express just the right boob inbetween to try and stimulate it...

Does this sound like a good idea?

Or is it that sometimes one boob is just not very efficient?

Thanks!

How old is he. Some boobs are leakier than others, doesn't mean you have less milk.

If he's going to sleep, are you sure it's not because he's full and satisfied?

It is possible that one boob produced more than the other I think - my ds feeds more often from my right side so that side tends to be fuller/leakier. Expressing isn't a very good indication of much though, so not being able to express much won't necessarily mean that the breast isn't working efficiently.

He´s 9 days old...

I'd be more concerned that you're sore. I had soreness in only one breast and it was a latch problem (caused by dd not being able to turn her head properly on that side). I found a rugby/clutch hold worked better for that breast.

Expressing tells you nothing and milk doesn't dry up or run out. It's constantly made.

I'd have a chat with a trained hv/mw or bfing counsellor to check out your latch.

I bfed dd for 3.4yrs and she always preferred one breast over the other and found that one easier. Said they tasted different too!

DD2 is nearly 8 months and my left one always has been rubbish, but the right one could nourish triplets. No mastitis or anything. Twas the other way around for DD1.

Ok, thanks. So it´s probably no biggie if he generally always takes a lot more from one side than the other? It shouldn´t cause any issues in his feeding.

Although, now I´m imagining that I will end up with one huge boob and one empty little one...

You can try starting feeds from the "weaker" side to see if it evens up? I only feed from one side at night, so inevitably that side is a little bigger but not really noticeable to anyone but me!

Second what MoonUnit says - start with the duff one each time, plus express when you can. Any pain, seek advice.
