How much milk does your 3yo drink?

Ds (turned 3 in oct) was under the dietician and the paediatrician when younger as he was slow to gain weight. Long story but basically they came to the conclusion he's just made small and has a small appetite which doesn't help.

He's not under them any more and his eating continues to improve although he still had a small appetite.

Anyway, the last time I sought advice on how much milk he should be drinking a day was about a year ago. At that point the dietician said a child of his age should be drinking 1 pint/ 600mls of whole milk a day.

He still has this amount now, half after breakfast and half before bed. Just wondering whther we could start to reduce this now he's older and eating better.

Enough blabbering on from me anyway, I started this thread to get a general idea of how much milk 3yo's are drinking..

So, how much does yours drink a day?

When mine were 3 they didn't drink any milk as a drink. Would have it in cereal but that was about it. I've never been keen on milk as a drink tbh.

NoahAndTheWhale · 15/12/2010 12:04

For me that is - I'd be happy with DS or DD drinking it but they really don't like it.

mamaloco · 15/12/2010 12:11

DD1 was still having a pint (probably still is at 5). DN had none since 1 has she hates it.
I stopped having "my pint" around 25 Wink except for the 2 pregnancies where I had 1/2 liter.

If he likes it and doesn't take he appetite away let him have it. May be not before bed though. Breakfast and after school snack? If he doesn't like it and eat cheese... let him drop it.

Dalrymps · 15/12/2010 12:12

Ah tight so quite a difference there. I'd like to at least cut it down I think. I'm just scared of making any changes cause he's doing well on this amount of food/milk. Am hoping he'll eat a bit more if we cut it down though...

I don't really measure how much milk DD drinks. She has some on her cereal daily, and sometimes she will ask for a cup of milk with dinner (she has quite a small sized cup, maybe 100ml), but often she requests juice or squash instead.
I buy semi skimmed milk now, because I don't like whole milk myself, and don't want two separate cartons in the fridge.

My 3 year old has a bottle before bed but that's it

Dalrymps · 15/12/2010 12:21

Sorry, x-posts, that was a correction for my last post..

Mum1369, how big is the bottle?

So far it seems he has more than the average 3 yo...

DD (3.6) has about a pint a day (all in all).
About half at breakfast with cereal.
Then about 300ml at around 3pm (provided by nursery)
Half a glass after supper.

I stopped allowing milk as a meal time drink because I realised how much it fills you up.

Dalrymps · 15/12/2010 13:23

Ah thanks, yes I don't give him his milk with his meals either cause he gets full easily...

moogalicious · 15/12/2010 13:32

from 1 year around 350mls (12oz approx) is recommended and not all (or any) needs to be in drink form as they can get the same nutrients throuigh their food. My lo's have milk with cereal, yoghurt, cheese, ice cream and the odd drink of milk before bed - they dont have set times or amounts

FestiveOrganisoid · 15/12/2010 14:02

Varies dalrymps, mostly he eats ok but I have low expectations after dd so it's probably not that much really!

Dalrymps · 15/12/2010 14:04

Ah I see Seona.. Ds eats a lot of cheese and has yoghurts etc so I think he would be ok with less.

Does anyone know what the guidelines are for 3 yo? Is it just the same as 1yo onwards or different?

food standards agency says this:

Children between the ages of one and three need to have about 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml milk (three fifths of a pint) would provide this

It doesnt seem to say anything for children above the age of 3 though

Seona1973 · 15/12/2010 14:18

waitrose has a handy guide

Dalrymps · 15/12/2010 19:52

Ah thanks, that's really good info! Think I'll cut his milk down a bit and see how it goes Smile
