hungry baby formula for a mix fed baby- advice needed

please can anyone offer some advice to a first time poster?

my little boy is three weeks old today. i could not breast feed cos he would not latch on so i express and give him approx 2 oz each feed and then a 3oz top up of formula. during the night he is exclusively formula fed and was happy with 4 oz formula. This seemed to satisfy his hunger when he was just 1/2 weeks old. he was feeding every 3 hours like clockwork.

however, this now for the past week does not seem to be enough and he does not want to stop feeding, and i generally have to take the bottle off him and distract him or he will fall asleep on the bottle- this latter point suggests to me that he is sleepy as opposed to getting his fill of food. When i last saw the midwife and explained this she suggested that i change to hungry baby formula.

i am a little apprehensive to change to hungry baby- i worry that once he starts he will only want foods that bulk him up and will not be satisfied by 'normal foods' when he is eventually weaned- is this totally irrational?

i did suggest to the midwife that i could just up the quantity of formula he is fed each feed by an ounce so, for example at night he would be fed 5 oz (150mls) but she advised that his stomach is too small to hold this amount of milk.

is there anything wrong with putting a 3 week old on hungry baby formula? or are there any other suggestions to ensure my little man is getting satisfied with his feeds.

i hope this makes sense. any advice is welcomed.

i think you should follow your midwive's advice - if you then have concerns you could go to your gp

How about feeding him more often, mummyrice, so he has greater quantities, which he seems to want, but spread out , if you see what I mean. I agree though - check back with the midwife.

Hungry baby formula does not 'bulk up' though. Its calorie count and fat content is the same as regular formula. It is supposed to take longer to digest, because the protein content is tougher (it's casein dominant, not whey dominant) and stays in the tummy for longer.

Does he have a dummy? If you're worried he's sucking to sleep rather than with hunger then he might be happy with a dummy.

Could it be a growth spurt so he actually does need to feed more often though?
