Will cosleeping stop a routine during day?

Hi,

I am currently cosleeping with my 6 week old. At night she gets milk on tap as I struggle to stay awake when she feeds. I am worried this will make it hard to space out feeds in the day as she is used to a drip overnight. Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks
Sarah

I don't see why it would make a difference - after all you're more likely to be active or out and about during the day so easier to distract.

But bear with it - 6 weeks is very little to be thinking of spacing out feeds. Soon she will probably start to go longer of her own accord anyway :)

I haven't tried to space feeds with my 4 month old, he generally wants a feed every 2.5-3 hours in the day. As Bertie says though, if we're out doing stuff he wants to feed a lot less frequently than if I'm having a lazy sofa and DVDs kind of day at home.

I co-slept and fed on demand with all three of mine, and ended up with pretty much the same routine with all of them. Things do fall into place eventually Smile Only advice I'd give is don't try and force things, and don't be too rigid - this period will be over far sooner than you'd think.

Also I am worried she will never sleep through as she is not having proper night feeds, just a drip instead. Will that matter?

I wouldn't worry. Just listen to your baby, feed her when she wants and don't worry about schedules/routines or spacing out feeds.

Spacing out feeds might reduce your own milk supply and end up with your baby not gaining weight as she should.

She will space out her feeds in her own time and will sleep through in her own time. My DS2 was a bugger for night feeding - he used to latch on before I went to sleep and I'd wake in the morning to find him still latched on so I do sympathise.

Oh and 6 weeks is classic growth spurt time. She is increasing your milk supply for you by feeding lots in the night.
