ds1 2.5yrs still has a bottle at bed time but it is an old split teat so it is down him in about 20 secs. Seems to associate it with bed time but he has his morning milk from a non spill beaker. Is it really that important after all!!!?

The Avent cups are fine without the valve. DS got to the point where he refused to drink out of a non-spill cup because he couldn't be bothered. But after he chewed up most of the Avent green and white spouts (plus the ones I had replaced) I gave him ordinary sippy cups. He's been on proper cups/straws/juice cartons since about 21-24 months.

DS stopped his bottle at 12 months but has never taken as much milk out of a cup and now never really has any. So this could be a down side of stopping it early especially since we always cleaned his teeth afterwards. It was bath, bottle, teeth, story, bed from 6 months when I stopped breast feeding.

Aloha I was told by a dentist that no amount of teeth brushing will prevent some the acid from sugary drinks getting to your teeth. Apparently our teeth can withstand three of these attacks a day, generally mealtimes, breakfast, lunch and tea and they recommend that juice is only given at these times.

my dd gave up her bottles without a fuss at 6months. she's on the tommee tipee beakers which i took the valve thing out of cos she couldnt work it out. she had a problem at first cos they are very fast flowing in comparison to a bottle but it only took a few goes to work it out

My daughter started nursery at the age of 3 and she was still having two bottles of milk at bedtime. She would drink her milk while I read the bedtime story. I was a bit concerned since she was in nursery and still taking a bottle but any attempts to get her to give up the bottle didn't work. So I guess for a quiet life I let her carry on for a while. She got a cold a few months later and didn't want her bottles of milk at bedtime while she wasn't well and after she got better we just never gave her one again. She did ask once but we just said you're a big girl now you don't need a bottle and she was happy with that.

My DD (16mo) has her one bottle of milk in a morning but she uses a Avent spout, rather than a teat with it. She refuses milk from a beaker or cup - she has all other drinks from anything - so this was our compromise at around a year old.

BTW, just got back from Italy and the children there seem to have bottes with teats until around 5ish at least - some we saw looked older. The bottles contained water, milk or juice too.

My dd is 2.3months she will have a bottle in the morning after breakfast and then at night and during the day if she is poorly, i have tried to ween her off but she wants none of it, she does drink from a beaker but only water(she doesn't drink juice)i don't give her a bottle when we are out i think it's a comfort thing when she is at home and tired, when she is ready i guess she stop
