How long using "rugby ball" position?

I'm wondering if I win a prize for "oldest baby still fed in rugby ball position"? Ds2 is nearly 9 months and we continue with this position thanks to a clever arrangement with my nursing cushion and a pair of tights (no I dont suspend him from the ceiling or anything lol!)
Dh reckons there will be another older baby out there still going strong rugby style.

Intrigued by how the pair of tights enters the equation!

sounds like you could be a winner. never found this position practical or comfortable for myself or either of my ds, so am always fascinated by people who can do it!

Just out of interest how does this work when out and about and whats with the tights?

CheekyGirl · 24/09/2005 21:10

Yup, my ds is also 9mths and feeds from my right side in the rugby ball hold!! It is the only way he will accept that side. It is also quite good as I feed him from the left first, then kind of slide him round to the other without having to turn him round. Great as it doesn't wake him as he is usually asleep at this point.

Great to hear I'm not the only one!

Please elaborate on the tights!

The cushion used to drive me mad by going too floppy so it is now tied about two thirds of the way along by the tights and this keep the beads a bit firmer up in the longer section of cushion. I use it folded over on itself at my side, so the longer part which he lies on is resting both on top of the shorter part and on my lap. Much more complicated to describe than it is to do!
Rugby ball always suited as my boobs are massive and the nipples tend to point out to the side a bit, I always have to support the boob with my hand anyway .

lol!
Do you take the cushion out with you?

Pob71 · 24/09/2005 21:38

Yorkie girl - I think you get the prize!

Did it ever get to the point that there just wasnt enough leg room at the back of the couch? I used to think this would happen but now I think we will just move forward on the seat with another cushion at my back if we need to.

ooh cheekygirl i do exactly the same - i'm left handed and initially found it easier to latch on that way. do find baby is difficult to slide into bed (upside down) though.

what on earth can pob71 be doing with the tights?!

fishie · 24/09/2005 21:41

oops sorry deadly slow posting amfeeding baby

Pob71 · 24/09/2005 21:44

Moondog - I take it with me if I'm going out for most of the day to my friends and we're going by car. When I go to toddlers or whatever I take a smaller cushion and can manage a cross cradle sitting on the floor or sitting on a chair with one leg up (ankle on knee kind of thing). It not very comfy though and he tends to be more scrapey with his teeth in that position for some reason - doesnt latch as well I suppose. Cant do traditional cradle at all just not the right shape for it!
We're great at lying down and sleeping too so that and rugby are the favourites!

Well Pob,sounds like it keeps you supple lol!

RosiePosie · 25/09/2005 08:18

I bf my dd for 18 months entirely in the rugby ball position. It was just physically impossible to get a good latch in the cradle position ( weird shaped boobs I think). I never really fed her in public though, a bit difficult to do it discreetly! And we always had to use a pillow too. If I hadn't fed her in this position though, I couldn't have fed her at all, let alone for so long.

So, am I the winner?
