DD2 (just turned 3y/o) was in hospital yesterday (along with DD3 (13 m/o) who's got bronchiolitis for the 5th or 6th time this year) with delirium and dehydration. The nurse was very concerned about how dehydrated she was (DD2 had been refusing to drink more than a sip for a few days post sick bug) so had put emla cream on her hands/elbows in preparation for putting an IV line for fluids.
While the nurse went off to see to other patients I persuaded DD2 to have a feed - which she did a proper both sided feed
- when the nurse came back she said she needed to do a prick test for blood sugars as children as dehydrated as DD2 have low blood sugars and she needed to see how low. The test came back normal at 6
so she avoided having an IV put in.
She perked up for a bit but after a chest X-ray she got all upset and refused to drink anything again. I bfed her again and she really felt better so had 2 cups of cows' milk straight after her feed.
I am so grateful that I am 'still' bfing DD2 today as if I wasn't I imagine she'd have not got sent home last night and might still be in today.
BTW this is no judgement/comment on any other feeding method/substance just my comment on my DD's situation. It works for my family (much to the confusion of the Drs/nurses
)
